ok i built this computer about a year ago. amd ath 64x chip, asus m2n32-sli something or other wireless mb, 2 gigs ddr2 mem, nvidia video card, dvd burner,.... a computer. the os is xp pro and i started out with a 320 sata and a 500 sata hd. both seagate baracuda's. this is going to kinda be a long thread but PLEASE bare with me. ive been at this for a while and am somewhere but close to nowhere. anyway i put the os on the 320 and only use that for the software and my music library(itunes). ok here is where it gets tricky and my questions start. i have thousands of dvds AND FOR GODS SAKE THEY ARE ALL LEGALLY PURCHASED!!!!!!!!!! im so sick of everyone giving me crap about that. i bought em dam$#t, They are mine and i can do what i want with them! I also have, man i dont even know, 3 or 4 thousand cds easily. anyway theres the history. since i built it i have proboble tried 20 different ripping softwares. freeware and purchased. im ok with the hardware(any tard can build one) but im a moron with the software. i got nothin :( i have ripped about 1000 ov the movies so far on the computer and have just added and added hds. i like the seagate 500 gigs. i have about 7 of them as long as ahandfull of others. 1 for action, 1 for drama, 1 for my kids movies, etc, etc, etc. the quality doesnt seem to be there. ive tried a tone of different things but just dont understand the nuonces of all the different stuff. most of the movies i used either magic dvd ripper, or AoA dvd ripper. i have also tried a bunch of others, dvd shrink, some divx thing i bought that converted to something or other. also i have tried a bunch of interfaces to organize them. spent 90 bucks on video vault(TOTALLY BLOWS) for nothing. so far i've just been ripping the dvds, putting each file(Movie, not whole disk. haven't gotten that far yet.)in its own folder and mounting the pic of the dvd from amazon or netflix or imdb on the front of the file so i can see it as a thumbnail after i put it in its proper hd. then i double click the folder and then the file if i want to watch it. it works but not quite how i want it to. i use orb a lot with my laptop and just plug it into the front inputs of misc. tvs where i want to watch. i love orb. its perfect. i have been doing this research for so long now that i don't know what to do anymore. i sound like a rambling crazy person but no one seems to have all the answers i need. so you can get an idea of exactly what im looking for Without spending $25,000 check out the kalidascape system or fusion media servers. i want that kind quality with a nice looking interface. is that possible to do without some specialty, ridiculously priced, stone wall system? i want it for in my theater but i also want to be able to access it from some other places. im not as worried about the interface because i found some addon in firefox that turns any photo array into a iphone flowing catalog type thing, similar to one of the views in itunes. im sure i can tweek that some how and that would be great. anyway sory this is so long. gimmy whatever ya got. ill take it and ill appreciate it. Hi!

You don't really expect anyone to try to make an effort to read the unstructured monstrosity you've posted, do you?

I'm sure if you look at your creation, you'll see that it appears to be nothing more than a solid block of letters...

Your "graph" was only funny the first time...) [/Color]It isn't mine; its as old as the internet.

And still oddly appropriate...

/perhaps I need a "WALL OF TEXT" macro?

I just got up and don't feel cranky so I'm going to help out here and even try to do without any sarcasm:

Even if you're new, chosing an appropriate title that tells people something about the content of your post is crucial.. those who browse the forum are unlikely to jump upon a "help" post, but if the title mentions something they know or have an idea about, things are different.

Furthermore, you do not want to scare people off with an unreadable post. That starts with proper use of capital letters.., continues with a decent effort at English, and decent presentation. There's a reason why newspapers, magazines, websites, everybody uses paragraphs to separate text - it makes things easier to read. If you scare people off with a single block of text as your post does, you've already lost the people who came as far as to click no the thread even though the title says nothing about its content - I'd say you probably rule out 99.9% of the people who'd potentially help you, but you most certainly gain the interest of people who will complain about a useless title and an unreadable post.

Made it through the block alive ^_^

1.) What's this "Orb"?

2.) This is what this forum is all about: DVD ripping. I recommend you try AutoGK with Xvid for high quality without getting your hands too dirty. If you find that you, like so many of us here, have a passion for this, there's all sorts of 'fun' stuff you can learn how to do, removing noise, resizing, converting PAL <--> NTSC, recompressing entire DVDs, upscaling to HD, etc. etc. etc. etc.

3.) Read the guides all around this forum, and search. DVD to a compressed file, I will hazard a guess, is what there is the most number of tutorials, questions, and answers about.

Orb is a website for streaming media. www.orb.com
I tried autogk and Xvid and it was pretty hard to use(for me). I know, I know I may be a little retarded when it comes to the software. Also I'm not quite sure the quality is there with the Xvid. Is that the best quality i can get? As it is now i only rip the main title because I don't know what the right software is to get the whole dvd with the top quality. Fusion media and Kalidascape make the system dreams are made of but cost way to much and loos acces to the net so i can use the system at both of my houses. Thoughts?

There are many AutoGK guides out there, including explanations of special settings that may increase quality.

Also note increasing bitrate/filesize will increase quality.

x264 will most likely get you better results than Xvid, but it's more complex to use, takes a brawnier PC to play, and has less hardware support.

You could do the encode "manually" by ripping the DVD, indexing it, and creating an AviSynth script to IVTC, color fix, resize, remove film grain, etc, then encode using VirtualDub, MeGUI, mencoder, or other... but that would be infinitely more complex, if you consider AutoGK difficult. Although you would most likely get better results because you have full control.

AutoGK is a very good compromise between going balls-to-the-walls as I just described and using a 1-click ripper, gives much better quality than the latter.
