Hi. being a Newbie I hope that 1.) I don't break any of the rules and 2.) This is the right forum for my problem . My problem is that when I backup a DVD and compact it using MeGui with the profile "XviD >58% comp, check (HQ)" and converting it to an AVI file, the video has no problems when using "Media Player 11" on the computer but when I transfer it to the stand alone Media player at the TV it will play but you can't seek ie fast forward etc. it says the file is only 12 seconds in length. A work around is to load the file into a Video editor and just resave it again as an AVI file without any modifications, but of coarse this takes another 90 mins or so to do. Upgrading the software in the media player isn't an option at the moment so I was wondering if I was doing something wrong or some of the parameters in the profile could be change that would fix this seek problem.
Thanks in Advance
Garry

Hi!A work around is to load the file into a Video editor and just resave it again as an AVI file without any modifications, but of coarse this takes another 90 mins or so to do. If you do this properly, it'll take less than two minutes ;>}:
1) Load the .AVI into standard VirtualDub
2) Set BOTH "Video" to and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copy"
3) Save with a new filename

Or if you're adverse to VirtualDub, open the AVI in AVIMuxGUI and save it :)
Side note, I have experienced something very similar with my Archos 605, it would only play AVIs muxed by VirtualDub or similar. I tried every option in AVIMuxGUI (the default AVI muxer for MeGUI), to no avail. AVIs written by xvid_encraw, though, would also work. Anything else would only show up as several seconds long and wouldn't seek.
If you get a moment, please try with both AVIMuxGUI and VirtualDub. If the former fails and the latter works, you may have my issue, which is cool since I've not yet found another device with it and it could be a step towards solving it ;-)

Hi Setarip_old
Thanks for the reply/help. I downloaded VirtualDum and did as you suggested and the seek problem was fixed but the audio was out of sync. apparently the audio file was VBR and AVI files don't handle VBR audio. Is my only choice now to go through the whole process again of ripping the Video & Audio off the DVD and recompacting and muxing again, making sure the Audio is CBR? or is there a quicker solution.

Hi Ranguvar
I will give it a try and get back to you with the results but I suspect it may have something to do with the audio file as mentioned in the reply to Setarip_old's post.

Hi
Just a follow up on how I overcome the problem. First the seeking problem on the standalone media player was easily fix by following setarip_old's advice. This took about 40 secs.
The problem with the VBR audio file (out of sync) was overcome by demuxing the file, converting the audio file to a CBR, and remuxing the file. This took about 8 mins to do.
The steps were :
1) Demuxed the file using AVI-MUX GUI, Audio file saved as a binary file.
2) Converted audio file to a CBR using MeGui.
3) ReMuxed video and audio files using MeGui.
4) Loaded muxed file into VirtualDub, then saved it as an AVI file as per setarip_old's directions.
Ranguvar I tried everything I could think of using MeGui but even after converting the audio file to a CBR the Muxed file still had the same seek problems on the standalone media player, the only way I could fix this problem was by doing step 4 above.
Hope this helps anyone else with similar problems and thanks all for the help and advice.

Please try just remuxing the file in VirtualDub beta 1.8 (supports VBR). You know, setarip's incstructions. (Older versions of VDub may work if you say NO at the prompt for VBR audio, but please use 1.8)

Hi Ranguvar
Yes I tried that and while it fixed the seek problem the resulting file's audio was out of sync, this I beleive is because Audio VBR isn't supported in AVI files. That is why I had to do steps 1,2 and 3 first. If the original audio file had have been CBR step 4 would have worked just fine.

Alright, thanks for your efforts.
(If you did indeed use 1.8 beta :p)
