I have an already CCE-reencoded NTSC DVD5 I want to convert to PAL. I don't have the original source.

What is a good (quality) way to perform the NTSC to PAL conversion?
Can DVD-Rebuilder or a similar program do this?

DVD-RB can't do NTSC to PAL conversion. There are other methods, but I'm not too familiar with them.

Imported it. Decided that having it on DVDR was best so I used DVD-RB Pro to make it smaller last year.

I should have the original DVD9 NTSC somewhere, I am not in the habit of throwing originals away, but after searching too long I decided it's MIA.

Oh well, if it's too hard I can always keep this NTSC version. Or check the bargain bins for a PAL version.

You can convert NTSC to PAL, using AviSynth

Its not that simple as it depends of exactly what type of source you have and that means doing a bit of work working out what the video format was

For a start, try these

The 1st one uses AviSynth so could be a good start as you won't need multiple bits of software, just DVD-RB

The 2nd ones a lot more complex and involves a lot more effort and software

I think I am going to give Canopus ProCoder a try. That post claims that the NTSC->PAL conversion is very good and that's the conversion I am trying to achieve.

May be you can try some commercial software, like roxio dvd copier it's use easily.

I just gave Canopus ProCoder 3.0 a spin last night.
This DVD has nearly 3 hours of footage. On quick mode ProCoder says it encodes at a speed of 0.7x realtime, however the estimated completion time is 70 hours..

Is this normal for a NTSC -> PAL conversion? I don't mind a long encoding process, but this is even much longer than my CCE encodes.

@Kwark
(Since two moderators have posted to thsi thread, Iguess it's okay).

Hi!

The following is a "quick and dirty" method that has worked for me (Although others have indicated that it doesn't ALWAYS work) and only takes a few minutes:

1) Rip your movie to the hard drive with DVD Decrypter ("File" mode, select "All files")

2) Use DVD Decrypter to change Region (Tools>>IFO>>Region Patch>>Region 1 Apply to "VIDEO_TS.IFO")

3) Open your newly ripped files with VOB Blanker.
(Cautionary) UNcheck both "Remove PUOPs" settings.
Under the "TitleSet", you'll see VOB files.
Click on the movie (Largest) VOB. Under "PGCs in Selected TitleSet", click on the largest PGC entry (Look carefully at "MB" versus "KB").
Return to the largest VOB under "Titleset" - and RIGHTCLICK on it. Select "Video Attributes" and change from "PAL" to "NTSC". This will also automatically change the resolution (To 720x480).

Repeat this procedure for all VOBs other than "VIDEO_TS.VOB"

Click on the "Process" radiobutton at the bottom of the screen.

4) Use IFOEdit to open "VTS_01_0.IFO" - Under "VTS Overview", change "menu attributes" to NTSC (The line will APPEAR to be unchanged but don't worry, it HAS been changed)

Click on the "Save" radiobutton and save modified .IFO - and select "Yes" to "Do you also want to save the .BUP?"

And 5) Pray that this "patch" method works because it does absolutely nothing to the framerates in the VOBs, which is why you need to convert in the 1st place.

@Kwark - it depends on the speed of your machine, but on most modern machine, using mastering quality, it shouldn't take longer than a few hours.

Strange. It's on an old Athlon64 3500+, which shows 0.35x speed for mastering quality. However, the estimate shown in 120hours to finish.

I probably made a mistake with the input, I selected all .vobs + .ifo's as input and encoded them all.

The only thing I can think of is to check your DMA and ensure your processors are being fully utilised.
