I'm using an hp dvd840 dual layer dvd burner. It's less than two years old. I usually only burn single layer dvds but it has a couple dozen dual layers with no problem. Now all of a sudden it can't read dual layer discs. When I open with dvd decrypter it thinks I have a single layer disc with data on it. Nero thinks its a dvd+rw, and Windows explorer doesn't recognize a disc as being in the drive. I'm using memorex dvd+r dl discs and I've tried discs from two different lot numbers so I'm reasonably sure its not the discs. I've tried loading a commercial dual layer dvd (Pan's Labyrinth) and it can't read that either. I've tried uninstalling the driver to no avail.
I have a panasonic dvd player which, after a few months of playing primarily burned dvds, suddenly stopped being able to read commercial dvds. Is it possible that dvd drives can specialize? That is, if they perform the same function repeatedly will they lose their capability to perform their other functions? Has anyone heard of this? If so, is there a way to restore it?
Many thanks for your time and assistance.

Hi!I've tried loading a commercial dual layer dvd (Pan's Labyrinth) and it can't read that either.Sounds like a laser problem.

Your burner might benefit from a cleaning with a DVD/CD cleaning disc. Maxell makes one that sells for about $10US...
