I have been given, as a present, the boxed set of the Godfather. The one which is "continuous" in that it does not use the flash back technique.
As I would like to maintain the integrity of my originals I have been using DVD RB to reencode to DVD5 but there is approximately 60% reduction with main movie only.
This is a bit "blocky" and I would like to try to improve it. (I understand about silk purses and sows ears).
As I have no idea about matrices, filters and such like (nor do I know how to use them) and reckon that this would be as good a time as any to start learning.
I can do the original encode using either HC or CCE, have plenty of time.
Can someone give me a starting point?
Cheers

You might care to pick matrices which fit into the various categories (Options - Advanced Expert Options - Quant Matrices). That might be a good place to start.

Thanks B.
It just occurred to me that perhaps 60% reduction is too much to do anything about.
What are your thoughts?

Just a general note: You really can't depend on percentages. There are a lot of originals that purposefully have bitrates that are more than needed simply to make sure it requires two layers.
It all depends on the source. 60% is just a number. 60% of 1000 is more than 90% of 500.

Hi!As I would like to maintain the integrity of my originalsThere may be occasions where, due to the perceived "significance" of the DVD(s), you'll want to simply make double-layered 1:1 backups...

I was beginning to think that DL, in this case, would solve a lot of problems.
I have never used DL before and don't know whether to go for + or -
Any advice here would be appreciated.
Additionally, would I just use AnyDVD/DVD D and then rebuild using DVD-RB?

I have never used DL before and don't know whether to go for + or -As noted many times at this forum and many others, thusfar, the only consistently successful D/L burnable media is Verbatim D/L DVD+R (NOT DVD-R), manufactured in Singapore (NOT India), burned at 2.4X...

You may want to enable REDISTRIBUTION and see if it helps.

You are probably a callow youth!Would that it were so!
"Pre-BabyBoomer" means prior to the end of WW II. Perhaps I should have simply said "I'm older than dirt" ;>}
