Apologies in advance if this is old knowledge but I couldn't find how to solve my problem when I did a search the other day. I'll keep this short 'cos I need some shut eye...

I installed a new Liteon DH20A4P in my dual xeon win XP sp2 system. I have always created my data DVDs with Nero's verify pass turned on. I did that now with the new drive. Wrote OK. Then lots of read errors in the verify pass. Spent some time investigating software/firmware - now all up to date (9P59 firmware).

To eliminate media issues etc I created a DVD on the drive and then used DVDInfoPro to run a CRC check. Firstly on the new drive and then on a DVD-ROM drive in the same system. DVD-ROM drive: No errors. DH20A4P: Stacks of errors. (Media was TYG03).

Investigated IDE settings. Noticed that DH20A4P was using UDMA4 mode and the other drive UDMA2. Wondered if it could be set too fast for my system and spent some time trying to figure out how to change the setting manually.

Found the info I needed here: http://snoopdos.com/blog/index.php?title=pesky_ata_66_disk_caddies&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

I set "MasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed" to hex6010 to allow only UDMA2 and UDMA3. Uninstalled the drive. Rebooted.

Repeated the CRC test: NO ERRORS!! Problem solved.
