View Full Version : Subtitles not appearing in AVI after selecting the subtitle track in AutoGK

I've been using AutoGK for over a year, but have not had to deal much with subtitles.

I want to convert a VOB file to AVI, and I want the subtitles from the VOB burnt into the AVI file.
The subtitles display fine when I play the VOB in VLC Media Player and select the subtitle track from the menu.

I selected the subtitle track in AutoGK and started the job. Everything appeared to run fine, but there are no subtitles when I play the generated AVI.
(I have not selected "Display only forced subtitles".)

The AutoGK log doesn't seem to indicate any problems. Here's a snippet:
[02/03/2008 22:58:43] Audio 1: Unknown language AC3 6ch
[02/03/2008 22:58:43] Subtitles 1: English
[02/03/2008 22:58:43] Format: AVI
...
[02/03/2008 23:00:03] Encoding audio.
[02/03/2008 23:01:40] Preparing subtitles.
[02/03/2008 23:01:53] Running single pass encoding.
...
ColorMatrix("Rec.709->Rec.601",opt=0,hints=false,threads=0)
VobSub("C:\Title\VIDEO_TS\2\agk_tmp\2.idx")
===========================================================
[02/03/2008 23:11:13] Duration was: 9 minutes 18 seconds
[02/03/2008 23:11:13] Speed was: 31.84 fps.
[02/03/2008 23:11:13] Job finished. Total time: 12 minutes 29 seconds

In the agk_tmp directory, there are two files called 2.idx and 2.sub with filesizes of 5KB and 216KB respectively.

I'm using AutoGK version 2.45.

Could anyone give me any pointers as to why the subtitles aren't being encoded into the AVI, or what I can do to fix this?
Thanks in advance.

Did you select the vob or the ifo?

I selected the IFO.

I selected the VOB first, but then the subtitle stream didn't even appear in the box in AutoGK where you select the subtitle track.

Are you sure you put a check mark on the sub?

Yes :-)

You can give me a little bit more credit than that!

Thanks for the replies

Are there any .srt files in your temp folder?

My log contains the line:
[02/03/2008 22:58:43] Subtitles 1: English

Your last (deleted?) post gave the sample log line:
[3/2/2008 7:53:19 PM] Subtitles 1: English wide

I'm not sure the difference between the lines is significant though.

As for .srt files, no there are none in the agk_tmp directory. These are the contents of the agk_tmp directory:

2 T01 3_2ch 448Kbps DELAY -176ms.ac3
2 T01 3_2ch 448Kbps DELAY -176ms.mp3
2.d2v
2.idx
2.sub
2_movie.avs
interlace.log
lastjob.vcf
vobsub.params
_.avi
_.avs

Hi,

Open the IDX in Notepad to check if you have timestamps listed for the video. If they're there, next check if they roughly correspond to the timings of the dialog in the video. You can also open the IDX/SUB in SubtitleCreator (Tools->Manipulate SUP or VobSub->Open Sub) or in SubResynch (comes included with VobSub) to read the subtitles.

I checked the timestamps in the IDX a couple of days ago - they looked sensible.
I haven't opened the subtitles in SubtitleCreator or SubResynch.

But...I tried the conversion again last night. This time I selected a different subtitle track - there were two, one labelled 'English' and the other labelled 'English for the Hard of Hearing' or sthg like that.
Anyway, this time it worked - the subtitles appear in the AVI.

I know this doesn't really make any sense, but I'm happy enough for now, so I'm considering the problem solved :-)

Thanks for the help

Yeah, that is peculiar. If that happens again, or something similar where you have a good IDX/SUB file that for some reason doesn't appear in the final AVI (or you can find some subs online), then you can also get them into the AVI by using the CTRL-F8 trick. Here's a guide:

Hi there,

I came across this same problem a few times. I can't really explain why the subs won't appear in de avi. I did notice something though: when I opened the vobs in SubRip and choose the right subtitle (the same as in AutoGK), it appeared to be empty!
So my guess is that AutoGK puts the subtitle in the avi, but you don't see anything because that subtitle is in fact an empty one.. (When I play the movie in VLC, it shows the subtitles, so they are somewhere in there :)).

I don't know how this empty subtitle appears in the vobs, I'm guessing in my case it has something to do with DVD2One.. (In DVD2One I set my subtitle to start automatically with the movie, might have something to do with it). When I find out, I'll post it here!

I use the same solution as manono describes, I rip the idx/sub files out of the vobs (with vobsub ripper) and add them using the ctrl+F8 trick :)

Greets,
Albrecht
