View Full Version : my first dl disc burn and I have some questions

I have always backed up my dvd's to single layer discs because I was never that concerned about picture quality. Even using dvd shrink with 50% compression was perfectly fine for me. I now wish to use dl discs for some of my backups.

I usually use ripit4me in full dvd mode and then use dvd shrink. This way I can then decide what audio streams to keep or get rid of. I was planning to do this for the dvd I didn't want to shrink but am a little confused with the build feature of imgburn.

I was then planning to just let ripit4me produce an iso with a mds file, then use imgburn or dvd decrypter to burn using the mds since I understand the mds contains the proper layer break. The problem with this is that I read that when ripping to an iso ripit4me does not use fixvts, and therefore dvd shrink may have problems opening the image.

The confusion I had with the build feature of imgburn was when I had to create the layer break position. I don't understand what half the stuff means but I had 2 choices that were "good', but even though some of the info was different, like start time, they seemed to be the same spot of the movie. Even during the preview they were the same spot.

From my limited knowledge of many details involved and my desire to keep it simple I think I will try to determine before hand what movies I plan to backup to dl media. I will rip these to an iso since I won't even have to open it in shrink. Movies I plan to put on a single layer disc I will do my old way.

I would still like to learn about imgburn though, including the seamless feature I have read about (using an Oppo 980, not sure if it supports the seamless playback). I have included a screen shot so you can see what I was talking about previously.

Thank you for any input or insight

Hi!I had 2 choices that were "good', but even though some of the info was different, like start time, they seemed to be the same spot of the movie.Perchance, is this a DVD that has two versions ("Theatrical" and "Extended", or similar) of the movie?

Not that I see. It is a concert video that has performances from a few different places, and interviews, credits etc.

Is there anyway to have ripit4me use fixvts when ripping to an iso?

As you have observed, PGCs 1 and 3 use the same cell. Pick either one.

ISO mode is a straight 1:1 decrypt without cleanup.

sorry I haven't responded back sooner. thanks for helping. Is there a simple way you could explain why there are two different start times but either would be ok for the layer break

I tried a couple of burns with the 1:1 iso created by ripit4me,using memorex (I know, I know) dl media. The first burn (benq 1640)had errors before the burn was finished and the second burn (plextor 716A)had errors during the verify process (not really sure what that is for but it was checked by default during installation). When I put the second disc in the benq drive and run cd-dvd speed, checking disc quality with a quick scan it gets halfway through then I get the error "no additional sense information" and cd-dvd speed crashes.

I haven't had a chance to watch the backup yet to see if it works but I would really like to get this right without making too many coasters.

I will try the build mode with imgburn and see what happens.

using memorex (I know, I know) dl mediaUnfortunately, saying "I know, I know" doesn't change the very real problems regarding D/L burnable media that have been noted at this and many other forums:

I realize that, but the MII Verbatim is also considered bad media from what I read at cdfreaks, and that is all I can find locally. It is also what Newegg is shipping. If you know where I can find the MIS Verbatims at a decent price I would be happy to purchase them. I decided to purchase the Memorex at less than $1 a disc basically just as a test to learn about DL burning.

I just finished building and burning (at 2.4x)the iso with imgburn. I got through the verify with no problems. I also let cd-dvd speed do a complete quality scan and no suprise, the quality score was 50%. Over 1 million pi errors and 12,000 pi failures. wow.
I'll watch it this weekend and see how it looks.

Anyway, would you happen to be able to give me a simple explanation of why the different start times and different pgc's for the same vts. I don't fully understand all the details of ripping and burning but I do like to learn.

Thank you

If you can't find good Verbatims, try the Philips DLs. Usually, they are good.
