View Full Version : Staxrip processes AVIs captured with Premiere, not WinDV

Hi Everyone,

I've been using StaxRip to convert .AVI files to H.264.

Everything works fine when I convert AVI files captured from MiniDV using Adobe Premiere Elements. However, now I've got a new computer with Vista and Premiere Elements no longer works (for the most part, good riddance).

So, I've been trying to capture DV video using WinDV instead. To my eye, the video I capture looks pretty bad (combing artifacts more visible) compared to Premiere Elements.

When I convert using the same workflow/profiles (yes, I deinterlace and all that) the H.264 file looks horrible from the WinDV captured files. Sometimes there's no sound. During compression, sometimes I get messages like "MP4box.exe has stopped working" or "windows explorer has stopped working".

What gives? I thought a capture was a capture was a capture! Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tunaboy

Have you tried both Type-1 and Type-2 DV AVI files?

Have you tried capturing with a different app - e.g., Windows Movie Maker (just as a test!)

All DV capture apps (well, 99%) use exactly the same underlying OS functionality. i.e, the only real difference is the user interface.

Do the files captured with WinDV play well with Windows Media Player?

If all these things look favorable then perhaps the H.264 encoder is at fault - perhaps not Vista-friendly.

Do you have any captured files from Elements on a hard drive somewhere that you can try to encode with StaxRip under Vista?

If you upload a sample maybe somebody can post a AviSynth script that works.

Thanks for the help. I re-booted the computer and Staxrip is no longer crashing. The capturing quality seems to be back to normal. Bizarre.
