I am having some problems with a few movies, swordfish being my current one. I am stripping all audio but the 5.1 and following the guide on derrows site to the tee. after it completes, i've tried to burn with vob (with 12-7 update) to dvd-rw (also with derrow's guide to burning with vob). says it's burned successfully. stick into my standalone (pioneer 434) and it will play fine till about 70 minutes or so. it will all of a sudden stop playing and freezes. I stick the disk into computer and play with powerdvd and it does the same thing, but a few frames different than the standalone. tried burning with nero 5.5.6.4 according to derrows site. same thing, but at a different point in the movie (about 71 min.) weird thing is that with the same disk, it doesn't always stop at the same frame, it stops +/- 3-4 sec.

using smartripper (backup mode) 2.41, ifoedit .81
pioneer DVR-A03

Anyone have a clue what this could be? I've had the same problem on a few other disks. I have also tried to go to dvd-r and the same thing happens.

please help me, I've got to get this fixed for my own sanity.

This is very strange!
I have no clue, what that can be.

What DVD-R media did you use ? which company ?

Btw. why don't you use DVD-RW media first, to test if it works ?
It would be much more expensive to burn coasters until you get a perfect backup.

Hey Derrow:

Using Verbatim DataLifePlus media, both DVD-RW and DVD-R. I do test with RW first, but I wanted to make sure that it wasn't the RW that was causing my problems.

Am I the only one who has had this problem? I don't know how to isolate the problem.

Hey Wellyman!

I found the same problem using the Plexdata DVDR. I tried to burn to a pioneer DVDRW and it worked fine until I burn the same compilation to a Plexdata DVDR. Usually the movie played fine for an hour or so and then it freezes and can't go forward. Strange thing is that this problem doesn't seem to occur to every movie I burned, some movies are fine and some aren't.

hey bru

i am planning on buying a pioneer dvd-rw to see if that's the problem. sounds like you have had similar problems too, but with different media. Are you using pioneer dvd-r's too?

OK. Think one of my problems is the media. Couldn't find another rw disk, so decided to go directly to dvd-r. First tried 'the 6th day' with success on both powerdvd and standalone. Then tried to do swordfish. works fine on powerdvd, but messes up on standalone. about 22 minutes in, the video starts getting jarbled (pixelated). First glitchy, then getting very bad and audio also starts going from dd to d pro logic to dd. This is the first time that a disk works on powerdvd and not the standalone. don't know, just seems to be many different problems with software/hardware. I've now burt/ruined 1 rw and 3 r disks trying to get swordfish.

Any ideas what could be causing the video issues?
Why would a disk play fine on powerdvd and not on standalone?
Could this be a css issue?

Hi Wellyman!

I'm using a pioneer A03 burner. I forgot to mention that I tried a pioneer DVDR and it worked fine, but recently I got this cheaper media (plexdata) which doesn't seem to work as good as pioneer dvdr, I've tried TDK and some other taiwan brand also (I forgot the brand 'cause it's in my office), and they work fine too.

One other thing, every DVDR will not work correctly after 40-50 minutes if you stick a paper on it (for means of DVD labeling). I tried this with lots of brands and nothing works. They will start to freeze and just like you describe, the Dolby digital will start blinking after the data reaches the center and moving to the side of the DVDR. On some DVDROM drive however, the same DVDR will most likely has the same error but not as bad as played in the standalone.

Let me know when you get some great DVDR media.

Hey guys:

Think I can got the problem narrowed to a bad rw disk (verbatim suck) and labels. never would have figured out that labels mess up disks. I've always just burt, tested, and then put labels on and put them away. They seem to work fine with labels in powerdvd, so I just assumed they wouldn't effect playback on standalone. Thank you, thank you, thank you! This does sort of put a damper on things. Outside of home ripping movies, I am trying to author dvd for work. As packaging is so important for professional use, am I gonna have to send a master out for reproduction? Are there no labels that work? If not, I'll make due. Just thank you both for helping me. I was very close to burning my burner.
Can't wait to start mass RE-production.

Thanks again,
wellyman

I have tried many brands of DVDR and none of them works if you put on a label. I tried to put a very small label like an inch long and the movie still can't run smoothly. So I never put any label on my DVDR anymore instead I just use a permanent marker.

Don't use any chemical stuff like 'go gone' to remove your label, just very carefully use your hand to remove it. But if the label has already been there for sometime, it will be very difficult :(
