Last night I was attempting to play a DVD with MPC that I have played before--with MPC. When I hit 'open disc' something to the effect of 'can't play encrypted dvd' was displayed in the status bar. This is a bit disconcerting because I had just played the exact same DVD with MPC the night before.

Any ideas? Could it have been an angry, sabotaging girlfriend?

Edit: A better question: What mechanism decrypts the DVDs for MPC?

Haali's renderer has some issues with macrovision. You might try reconfiguring to VMR9, or installing ffdshow if it turns to be a decoder problem. To remove all encryption, just use DVD Fab HD Decryptor.

Hi!

1) What is the Title and Region number of the DVD?

2) Are you attempting to play your original, commercial DVD, or a backup copy?

@Foxyshadis

I'm not using the Haali Renderer so we can eliminate that. I am using VMR9 and ffdshow with MPEG2 DVD Decoding enabled. In this configuration does ffdshow do the decryption?

I'm not sure of Title and region number as a I'm posting from work. The DVD I'm assuming is a US region dvd (whatever that is) as I rented it from Blockbuster. So this is an original commercial DVD done by Paramount. To be even more specific it's the Kids in the Hall movie "Brain Candy."

I was thinking that I may want to check to see if the girlfriend had disabled DVD decoding within ffdshow. Could I expect this exact behavior from MPC-HC if nothing else had changed but the "enable dvd decoding" checkbox had been unchecked?

I was able to get the DVD to play by using my on Lite-On DVD drive as oppposed to my newer Plextor DVD-R/RW drive. Now I'm really confused.

1) Not all drives are equally capable of reading "less than perfect" DVDs - such as rental DVDs that may have been previously mishandled.

Try cleaning the DVD and try running a DVD/CD cleaning disc on your Plextor. Maxell makes one that sells for about $10US.

2) Can you play OTHER DVDs on your Plextor (that also play on your Lite-On)?
