View Full Version : Difference between BD9/BD5 and AVCREC?

In anticipation of getting a Blu-ray Disc player sometime later this year, I'd like to start burning all of my archive discs using a BD compatible format. After reading up on XolocoTuxmaster's great thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1096592) regarding BD9/BD5 discs, I have a good start.

The problem is, the Blu-ray Disc Association isn't talking about BD9 discs. They've gone an finalized something called AVCREC (http://www.blu-raydisc.info/format_spec/avcrec_specs.php). It sounds like it's the same thing as a BD9 disc, but my google-fu searches through various Japanese-translated articles suggest that it may not be. The official specs are not available to the general public, so there is no way to verify.

It doesn't sound as if AVCREC is just a fancy name for AVC HD on a DVD9 or DVD5 disc. Those Japanese articles stated that it supports MPEG2, MPEG4-AVC/H.264, AC3 and PCM streams. However, SMPTE-421M/VC-1 was nowhere to be found. An omission or an error?

So, does anyone know exactly what it is? What are the differences? Most of all, how can I make one?

I would like to know it too...it's very confusing.

I'm not sure, but I think it's just a new way to say "AVCHD"...more similar to "HD DVD content DVD" HDREC. Some weeks ago...AVCHD had its own section in www.blu-raydisc.info and was changed for the AVCREC one...

By the time, BD9 is the best way to ensure compatibility. The only problem is that for PS3 you have to rewrite 2 files...which makes disc not compatible to stand alone players...but the original BD9 plays fine in them all

PD: The message of your link is "very old"...we were using Tsremux that rewrites the 2 files at newest versions and that's why Nazgul said it didn't work

Interesting. The only thing is, there are all of those interviews in Japanese where various industry leaders talk about how AVCREC supports both MPEG4-AVC/H.264 as well as MPEG2. From what I have read, AVC HD only supports the former standard.

One of the things discussed was that AVCREC was going to be used as a medium for transporting short (1 hour or less) hi-definition media clips to television stations for broadcast using ISDB, Japan's over-the-air digital broadcasting standard. Just like ATSC and DVB-T, ISDB uses an MPEG2 video stream.

I would think that they would want to avoid an H.264 to MPEG2 conversion, instead favoring a direct stream copy of MPEG2 from disc. As such, maybe the BD Consortium revisited the idea, giving AVC HD on DVD the boot.

I have no plans on purchasing a Playstation 3, so it doesn't really affect me. I'm just looking for a stand-alone BD player to replace my current Toshiba 480p DVD player.

Does PS3 support AVCREC?
What resulotion does AVCREC support? ex 1280x544 or is it only 1280x720?

Is there any software to create AVCREC or announce software to come out?

Could this be the start of "Managed Recording" Sony's new Content Protection Workflow?

AVCREC is the same as AVCHD from what I have seen.. just a change in name do to the demise of HDDVD I am assuming? I doubt that the format will change but if it does you can always still use AVCHD format.
