Ive been mass converting all my DVD rips to h.264 AVC w/ AAC

My receiver does support AAC encoding and when I play these back on my PS3 it passes the AAC to my receiver w/o a problem and it decodes to 5.1.

How can I accomplish this on the PC? Do I have to transcode AAC to AC3 and then pass AC3 to spdif?

Depends on the media player you're using I think.
Media Player Classic can output AAC to SP/DIF.
Same with DTS and AC3.

It's possible to configure FFdshow's audio filters to transcode 2Ch/6Ch AAC-LC or HE audio to 2Ch/6Ch AC3 audio and pass the bit-stream via SPDIF to your surround sound amplifier.

This is what I do :)
