A recent viral/malware combo managed to infect my system and I've been forced to conclude that only a complete reformat and reinstall will finally fix my system. Unfortunately, my OS disc is Win XP SP1. :o I saw that there is a Service Pack 3 for Win Xp, and I would to upgrade to this after reinstalling. What I need help with is then creating an OS disk that be used to reformat and reinstall on its own. Since Microsoft is concentrating on Vista, this will probably be the last upgrade to XP and I have no plans to get Vista. I know there is a standalone upgrade to SP3 that's about 336 megs and I'm pretty sure this file is the one I need. Could some one please point me in the right direction?

http://nliteos.com
and pick up SP2, and ryanVM's post SP2 update pack
all three .net frame work packages
and any drivers you want(minus creative's)
and follow the instructions and you can make your own custom XP install disc
I got a few nice ones made up, so nice

Use nlite to help with the integration, or look up manually slipstreaming it yourself, if you'd like to make the installation much quicker. The file you want is here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=75ED934C-8423-4386-AD98-36B124A720AA&displaylang=en).
The very beginning of the windows setup process includes a screen where you can blank and recreate a partition, so there's nothing special you need to do to reformat.

IŽll second that, I just finished a fresh install with nlite and it was smooth. Very easy to make your own custom installation.
I missed that ryanVM's post SP2 update pack
There are always things youŽll think later, ooh that would have been nice to include . Good job cds are cheap :)

yeah main reason I used nLite at first was I got a volume license but it was sp1, so I hated waiting for like 3 hours for updates to DL and install
also with nlite you can remove(please don't though) services and disable them, take out drivers(whens the last time you used ATM?) and configure all your settings
although
if you use SP3 check the nlite forums, I just remembered you might not need ryanVM's update pack with SP3

Oh man another vote for nLite + SP2 + ryanVM's update pack.
SO nice holy crap.
SP3 is still in RC status AFAIK.

True , I think the first two or three finished isoŽs are trial and error. I unchecked WMP and for some reason could not install my hybrid capture card ."Error WMP 9 or above must be present"
After honing your custom cd it almost becomes obligatory to format and try it out. :)
kempodragon , if you havŽnt reinstalled yet, or before, IŽd suggest copying your favorites in Iexplore / Firefox , somewhere other than C as you will lose them.

It just went RC 2

Yep. I suggest getting the whole firefox profile. It's very nice if you have plugins (like stumble upon) installed, and it preserves all your favorites, history, preferences etc...

I've already started moving my favorites and other critical items (savegames and copies of latest drivers) to my data drives which are still clean. I've downloaded the sp3 file and read the nLite docs. It seems pretty straightforward and I plan to reformat and reinstall this weekend. I only have one question about the addon part. Are the programs that you can put in after setting up your OS actually installed afterward or are they burned with the iso and you have to manually install? I would love to have my video drivers and virus/malware programs to install themselves. My sound card is a Creative Audigy, so I realize that I have to do a reboot during the installation.

the addons are installed right to the disc, so they'll be there once you install
you can add files to the iso if you want, just put them into the folder that you ripped the files from

make sure you do not remove 'help and support'
I found that one out the hardway
it removed all the wsh objects as well as the .net ones did not install either
means you can't access 'system info' and other related tools, even process explorer is affected
so be careful what you remove
