View Full Version : How to specify bitrate?

I know how to use "Custom Size" to make AutoGK produce a file that's approximately the bitrate I want. But is there any way simply to enter in the desired bitrate from the start and encode at that rate without using "Custom Size?" Thank you.

“Custom Size” is not approximate, it should hit the target size quite exactly. Also it doesn’t matter if you specify bitrate or size. They are two ways of specifing exactly the same thing.

But I don't wish to hit a "target size," strictly speaking. I want to specify the bitrate instead of working backwards from Custom Size with a calculator. Is there no way to do that?

Why do you want to specify bitrate. Because you aim for a certain quality level? Bitrate is useless for this. 1-pass quality mode is the way to go.
Or because of some other restriction? Then you might want to try 1-pass bitrate (ABR) mode. However afaik AutoGK doesn’t support this.

well you could if you wanted calculate the file size using your desired bitrate, then input the file size?
there is a formula here,

So AutoGK doesn't support specifying a bitrate? Thanks. Wish you would have said so the first time, though. I didn't ask which was the "way to go."
(Really, why would it matter why I want to specify bitrate instead of file size? It's to compare the results against HandBrake, for the record, but why was it so hard to get an answer to the question I actually asked?)

It's to compare the results against HandBrake
Then why didn’t you say so in the first place?
Usually people want to set a bitrate because they think it has a meaningful connection to quality, which is not the case. I still don’t see why you need a bitrate instead of a filesize to make comparisons, but ok...

Why should I need to provide a reason for wanting to know if a given program performs a certain function?
"Where's the nearest Starbucks?"
"Winchell's makes better coffee."
"I'm looking for a Starbucks. Are there any nearby or not?"
"But why do you want Starbucks?"
Know what I mean?

Because ignorant people have asked that same question countless times, thinking that bitrate somehow equates with quality.
But you're right; someone answering "no" to your first post might have saved a bunch more postings. I apologize for not spotting the thread earlier.
