Hey there!

Allthough it seems VLC isn't overly popular around here, I kinda liked to notify everyone that a patch (done by me and atmo) has been commited to the trunk that enables proper multichannel AAC playback. This has been an issue for years now and kept me from using AAC and sticking to ffdshow.

I think ffdshow is still more powerful and versatile, but when it comes to easyness of use, VLC is top. And now with this unnerving bug finally sorted out, I think it may be of interest to some people here.

You can find prebuilt versions with the comitted patch at http://nightlies.videolan.org

Use a version that has been built after Feb. 10th, 19:43 ;)
Note that these nightlies tend to show obscure bugs, but at the moment are still (far) superior compared to the latest "stable" version (nevertheless I'm trying to implement the patch to the stable version aswell).

Other major improvements compared to the latest stable:

-Qt4 Interface rather than wxwidgets
-Vastly improved mpeg4 avc decoding
-Vastly improved playlist interface
-Ability to use wmv DMO rather than built-in decoder.
-A boatload of other bugfixes..

Downsides:
-New Qt4 Interface ships with it's own load of little bugs
-Bug in freetype module tends to crash the player under circumstances when freetype is used (e.g. subtitles, OSD etc) (use http://molkemon.funpic.de/libfreetype_plugin.rar to circumvent)

Best regards,
cmw

BTW: Deleting "libfreetype_plugin.dll" from "plugins" folder prevents the latest nighties from crashing on Win32...

Right, but it does also prevent you from using Subtitles. As a workaround, I've uploaded a freetype.dll that will not crash.
Just take this and overwrite the one in the /plugins directory.

The Problem should be Windows only anyway.

I saw the mac version but it's NOT after Feb 10th as stated....I guess we'll just have to wait a little longer.
