In my haste to batch convert all of my DVD rips to h.264, I almost missed the audio stuff.

My biggest concern is compatibility followed by quality, then size.

My receiver supports AAC streams so I believe Im ok there, Im just having a problem figuring out some minor AAC details.

Im using AutoMKV to do the transcoding and I keep reading its best to have the Nero AAC encoder select the level (lc, he , hev2). By default AutoMKV uses .35 quality. According to nero thats roughly 99bitrate. All of my sources are AC3 5.1 straight from the DVD (some are DTS source). I'm looking to be sure that it's using AAC-LC and at a bitrate thats hard to determine between the original source.

I realize there isn't a magic # but at what average do you start to get diminishing returns with AAC when encoding 6channels?

Just using the "quality" setting, and not specifying an actual bitrate, typically a setting between 0.4 - 0.5 is decent. This is assuming that this "quality" setting in AutoMKV is refering to the Nero AAC quality parameter. Tho I don't use AutoMKV.
