Hi guys !
I'm seeking help for a strange issue on my box.The box apart the HDs is new one .It runs xp pro sp2 and it played .avi .wmv .mpg files pretty well with wmp 9 , zoom player , vlc player.
Suddenly after a codecs upgrade of zoom player or a wmp program update via the windows update ( i'm not sure maybe both ) randomly when i try to play video files it hungs in a BSOD
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR _EQUAL .
I hadn't add any hardware recently. The BSOD appears with all the
players i'll tried and isn't related to a specific video file.
It also appears when a try to play DVDs.
I uninstalled varius codecs/programs ( ffdshow, haali splitter, dscaler , AviSynth , directVobSub , ds-mp3 source , shoutcast , xvid video codec ) which didn't solve the problem.
I made a repair installation of xp and was able to play .wmv files.
But after a reboot the problem occured again with the same details BSOD IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR _EQUAL.
I checked for virus/malware and it's clean.

Any idea ?

Thanks in advange ! !
:thanks:

That problem can occur if you've overclocked your computer too much. If you have done so, if you knock back the fsb by a megahertz or two it could resolve the issue.

Another cause of the problem is a driver issue. It is possibly a bug in the display driver - it can work fine for games and not for videos as they are two different parts of the driver (very basically put), or even a problem with the sound driver or other system driver. I suggest if you haven't overclocked that you try updating to the latest drivers available.

There will be more info shown on the BSOD that can help pinpoint the problem.

I havent overclocked nether the CPU or the graffic card.
The BSOD was IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR _EQUAL
STOP: 0X0000000A (0X00000016, 0x0000001C, 0x00000000, 0x80502392).

Video related BSODs are usually, in order in my experience: Overclocked system, bad graphics card driver, bad memory, or otherwise unstable system, like a bad motherboard or failed fans. Video playback stressed the computer, even if not as much as encoding.

So try updating the driver, swapping in known good memory, and poking around inside the computer to make sure everything's good.

I searched for related problems and found that my ASUS graphics card 8500GT silent 512MB HDCP due to the bunndled software that came with the card ( gamerOSD , gameface messenger , smart doctor , Video Security ) may give such BSOD.
So I uninstalled all the related ASUS software plus the display driver and installed the latest nvidia drivers from the nvidia site and now it can play all smoothly. :)
Thanks for your replies
