I am unable all of a sudden to burn a movie (ripit4me then Shrink). The movie is The Lady Vanishes, an old Hitchcock movie. Normally after Shrink it goes directly into Nero and burns. I ahve never had a problem. Today before the burn phase in Nero I kept getting a message "looking for disc" and I tried 3 different brand new blank discs and got the same message. Then I went into IMGBurn and tried to burn the files to a single layer disc. I got the message "device not ready(medium not present). Can anyone help me solve this?
The burner is a Sony that came with my Dell less than a year ago. Its never failed me before.

Well, it's failing you now. Is the firmware up to date? Maybe you got a bad batch of disks.
Tried powering off and rebooting?
Moved to DVD Burning.

@oldman
Hi!
Is it possible that you've somehow changed the drive pointed to by these programs?

Hi,
The drive is the correct one. Since writing I discovered the drive in question will not read a recorded DVD or music CD either.The drive light blinks and then ...nothing. Also I can't even burn anything, including from iTunes. Someone suggested the drive was dead and I should replace it with a new one. Interesting enough if I go to "System properties-device manager -properties " in XP it says:
"This device is working properly.
If you are having problems with this device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter."

Before giving up on it, you might want to run a DVD/CD cleaning disc on the drive. Maxell makes one that sells for about $10U.S.

XP saying 'This device is working properly' doesn't mean anything beyond its driver is working ok and talking to the hardware.
It doesn't know if the laser / internals of the drive are ok.
You could liken it to a mouse with the mouse ball removed. Windows would still say it's working fine but the angry user would know otherwise!

Thanks to all,
I finally had to take the computer into a local shop, the DVD burner had to be replaced, whether or not it could have been fixed who knows, with the cost of labor it was cheaper to replace it . I had an LG lightscribe put in that came bundled with Nero and its happy days again.
I appreciate your help and advice.
