Most efficient way to do Mpeg1 => WMV9?

Hi I have 1000+ X 30min 640X480mpeg1 files that i need to convert toWMV9, I'm testing Sorenson Squeeze but it's very slow, i have a few quad core machines for this and i would like to know from you gurus which app to use. I have tried to install the wmv9VCM software so i can encode in Vdubmod but the output is .avi? I'm an encoding Noob so please have mercy with me.

TMPGEnc Xpress is pretty fast with HD material, I'm assuming it would be even faster with 640x480 although i havent tested it with that resolution.
