a quicker way to encode svcds with great quality

i give credit to Ddogg for posting a very similar way along time ago
however the search is messed up and i think people can benefit with slower machines.
i know that this has been talked about before and it has been brought up recently, but for any newbie or someone who doesnt want to wait follow these tips.
ok under bitrate change your settings to so.
all your cd sizes change to 796mb
from left to right change the max bitrate to 2400, your min bitrate to 1900, uncheck your min average(i dont use it) and lastly your max avg. to 2250. leave all the other things checked as they are default.
now to the cce tab. choose a 1 pass vbr. change your q factor to 5
change your image quality priority to 5 as well.
leave everything else checked as it was by default.
also Ddogg reccomends to change your temperal smotthing settings to 2,1 this should help in faster motion on some movies. (i wonder if it helps in animation?)
lastly under your audio change it to 192 and do not convert it to 41
this is a waste of time, imo and the sound is just fine.
ok, thats it i guess. on my rig and hour and a half movie takes me about 2 hours and 15 minutes. granted i have a p4 1.7 and 256 rdram i want to up it to 512 though.
i realize that this might not work for you the same, i just want to help some people out who dont want to wait 20 hours to do a movie, and with this method, i achieve the best looking results that i have ever had. so far- that is =)
good luck,
and please post here with your results, maybe more and more will use this method in the future, maybe not....

Just want to point out a couple of things.
The audio talked about is 44.1 not 41. It should read do not downsample from 48->44.1. Just so there is no confusion.
Second the default for the TemporalSmother setting is that 2,1 and it doesn't need to be changed. Understand that using TS will cause your video encode rate to drop almost 40%, but will help make a better encode. So you must decide what is more important here. Try a chapter or two each way and see what you like best.
Changing the audio setting to 192 will not help in speed, but will allow more bits to be used on video for the same file size.
Not converting to 44.1 will save a ton of time and is a waste unless you use a SVCD player and not a DVD to watch them.
If you find that DVD2SVCD makes more discs then you wanted using these settings drop the MIN and Max AVG settings.

I just converted "Ah! My Goddess - The Movie (2001)"DVD
NOTE:Anime Movie
DISK1: 805 MB
DISK2: 779 MB
Time to convert About 4 1/2 hours on PIII-1000 w/1024mb ram
Tested on Stand-alone player:Pioneer DV-444
All I can say is "WOW,Fastest convert & the picture was very crisp. It could have been a 3pass & I would have never known it"
Next Movie using these settings "Unbreakable"
will have results in the morning.
thought I'd test out Anime & non for ya"

@kraven morehead
Ok i took your advice and tested it with The Godfather part 3
The encoding was faster as 3 or 4 pass quality looks very good but yes there is a but :) after 5 secs of playing picture is freezing for a sec and continues again after every 5 or 6 secs it is doing it again.
So did i do anything wrong ?
Used these settings:
max bitrate 2400
min bitrate 1900
unchecked min average
max avg 2250
other settings checked as default
1 pass vbr
q factor 5
image quality priority 5
Tempsmooth also checked
TBird 1000
512mb ram
win2k sp2
Hmm just found out that is only in the bbMPEG_Muxed_File-subbed00.mpg file all 4 off them and not in the muxed files without subs i used english cvd subs.Does this means i cant use vbr 1 pass with subs or did something went wrong with the muxing part ?
Damn it works just fine on my standalone tested 2 cd`s with a cdrw
Ok ignore my previous question now because it just works only on the pc it stops after a few secs and continues.
sorry
kraven morehead

well i never use subs so i cant say for sure.
all of your settings look fine.
did you set your audio to no downsampling?
just leave it a t 44.1
i can say for porn or bad quality dvds , they come out crappy with just about any settings , but for most hollywood type flicks, they come out great for me. im glad to see that anime comes out good, as i have about 10 on order from netflix =)
cool.

The reason why Porn and camcorder based video comes out bad is that unlike regular movies the camera moves allot. This adds tons of information that needs to be added into the mpeg stream. Our highest bitrate is still nowhere near enough to handle this.
Moving the camera is far worse then having the fastest scene in a movie as far as we are concered. Even the fastest most complicated movie scene has many things that do not change from frame to frame, but when you move the camera fast everything changes and must be accounted for.
It's an mpeg issue and not the fault off DVD2SVCD or CCE.
SteveV have you made other movies with DVD2SVCD that work perfect with you DVD player? I have seen this problem before and almost always it's the DVD player. It seems that some Apex and almost all Cyberhome units have this problem. Try playing the file in WinDVD or PowerDVD and see if it is still there.

i think you are right on about the camera deal.
i just encoded terminator, and the only time i notice a block or
a jump is when the camera pans quickly.
just part of life, i can live with it.

I have one of those Girls on Spring Break videos and I only tried to encode it to add chapters. It was really blocky the whole way through. It was of course almost 100% camcorder based material and the camera moved constantly.

On my standalone dvd player it works just fine only on my pc it stops every 5 a 6 secs and continues after another sec.
Tried it with Mplayer 6.4 and powerdvd. The muxed files without subs worked just fine on the pc too.Only the sub muxed files dont play on the pc but very good on my standalone Scott 838.
So actually the problem is fixed for me.
Doing another svcd right now with the new pre 7 build same settings etc.

Hi. I would really like to give this a try but I have a few questions. I would like to be able to set one of my dvds up around 10pm and have it done by morning. Currently 3 pass VBR is about 15 hours.
What happens if the calculated average is less than the 1900 min you have set. Will the program just kick out an extra cd? If you must have a 2 cd rip, is multipass still the best.
If this is just as good, and so much faster, why is 3 to 5 pass vbr still recommended?
When you make these modifications, is temporal smoothing necessary?
Thanks in advance for any help. BK

Thanks Kraven !!!!
I´ve tried your method and the results are great !!!! A great quality (the same that with 3 or 4 passes) and the most important think for me: its fastttttt !! Only 3 to 5 hours for film. (before I always rip a film around 15 20 hours !!!!)
Thanks again and a special congratulations of author of this awsome software.

This was my first attempt at DVD to SVCD Concerting
so a quick way seemed like the ticket...
Did a 3 chapter rip and Burned to CD-RW for test on my PIONEER DV-535 player..no probs
So DVD2SVCD'd PREDATOR 2 (103min) to two 80min CDR (using kravens above settings) took about 4hrs....and sweet a 'perfect' (to me) copy.
FOR THOSE OF YOU WITH LOW HARD DRIVE SPACE ( i.e ME :) )
I chose to split the movie on a chapter break (at around 50mins) this way it did not have copy all the VOB then convert all and make multiple CUE/BIN files all of which take up space (valuable when you have less tha 5GB free !! )
I then did the remaining chapters as a separate conversion...
Does anyone see a problem with this method ???
Cheers Kraven for the setting TIP and I plan to make a donation soon as I can, Keep up the good work on DVD2SVCD.

@APP
Your method will work and is not the worst if you have low HDD space. But remember: If you have a movie with less action in the first half an lots of explosions and movement at the second half, CCE can't 'send the unneeded bits from the first CD to the second CD'.
You can check this by comparing the CCE-bitrate of both CDs. If they are close to each other, you have splitted well, but if one is much bigger than the other, you better set another split point.

Worked pretty good :) Only took 2 hrs of CCE to encode a 2hr svcd too :)

THose who have tried this, did u just need 2 cds after encoding?
I dont want to use 3 cds, so I am using CBR instead of VBR
Does VBR makes the quality so much better?
markrb
8th February 2002, 19:30
No VBR technically will never be better then CBR at the same bitrate, but this is covered very well in other threads. I suggest you try a search.

oh shit! i just saw the passes x5 thing. i know i set it to one pass vbr. WTF? oh well, never mind:o
wait a second, (this is an edit) the log says passes: 5 then it says one pass vbr as the encode mode. are these "passes " referring to the same thing? by the way, is there any way to shut off vaf file creation? or would that just screw things up?
another edit (i like talking to myself:D ) the method described suggests making all your cd sizes 796.00 how does this help? does it bump up the bitrate?

falcor I only have a moment now. I will come back when I get some more time and add on.
TS is a filter and it slows you down about 40%.
This is an old post and at the time there was a bug in the CD image size. Setting it lower to 796(for 800mb 80 minute discs) helped fix it until the bug was fixed.
Keep the Vaf file unless you do CBR. It makes no difference there. In VBR always keep it.
Buffy Time back later.

shit. i deselected create vaf file when i re-launched the process with all of the pre described settings. (i guess i ad-libbed a bit) the result was great, but i have tried a burn yet ( i also did not create images) so i will try to burn the mpegs and see what happens. can i use cdrwin and just use the load tracks dialog, or try to do a svcd in nero? well, i guess i will find out. thanks mark. (p.s: the 1.5 hour animated movie, ( road to eldorado) only took something like 5 hrs and as i said, the quality is unbelievable) thanks bro, falcor

I read this thread and I want to try it, but the encoder instructions were for CCE.
Has anyone tried it successfully with TMPGEnc?
Thanks
Jason28
13th May 2002, 07:51
There is no way that you can use these instructions with TMPG. TMPG has different options then CCE. The point of this post is to use CCE and get the best encode in the least amount of time. If you want to find some instructions to get the best encode with TMPG do a serach there was a post by one of the mods in the advanced froum that had good results.
Ok. Let me get this clear. The settings that Kraven posted in the beginning of this threads is the BEST setting for BEST VIDEO, AUDIO & ENCODING TIME (size and time doesn't matter just best video and audio)??? So if anybody have another settings that is best video and audio please post it. I've read all of the threads. Seems like alot of people likes the setting. So is that the best one ? One of the thread mention about downsample to 44.1 is good to do that? My target is to play my ripped DVD on stand alone DVD Players. Soo is good to downsample?
markrb
30th May 2002, 17:10
Ekin this post is strictly for those who need speed, but still good quality. If speed is not an issue and quality is what you want there are plenty of other posts. Read around the forums including the advanced forum. Also your downsampling question has been answered many times including in the Q + A. Read the forum everything you asked has already been discussed.
