hi there.

I have a system with two optical drives, a Pioneer DVD-119 DVD-Rom and a LG GSA-4167B Burner (on WinXP x64 SP2).

-------------
problem:
-------------
recently both drives are having different problems.
both seem to not being correctly detected by Windows anymore:
"This device is working properly.
Windows did not start a related device driver..."
here are some screen shots:

this happened out of the blue after I ripped some video DVDs via DVDFab HD Decrypter v4.0.5.5.

my DVD-Rom's light doesn't flash at all during booting or media insertion and it doesn't read any media anymore. though the tray still works.

the burner can still read all media perfectly, though burning (at least with Nero) doesn't work anymore. I tried to burn one CD and on DVD so far, both brands worked flawlessly before (same spindle).
FYI, I attached the burning log.

I fear that the Pioneer might be dead, but it's still very strange that both drives have the same driver issue at the same time, so maybe something else is going on.

everything else is working correctly and I didn't make any vital adjustments or changed something critical for all I know.

-------------
what I've done so far:
-------------
1. tried to roll back driver - "no driver files have been backed up for this device"

2. had a look at the integrated troubleshooter - to no avail

3. deinstalled the drives and let Windows reinstall - to no avail

4. physically unplugged the devices and made sure all cables are in place.

5. made sure the BIOS settings are all right, both drives run in UDMA mode and master-slave settings are correctly identified.

6. googled the error message, but most things were related directly to Vista or didn't hold anything new.

-------------
-------------

does somebody has any further troubleshooting advice?

I'll try to install the DVD-Rom in another computer tomorrow in order to see if it's working there.

thanks for reading.

Remove the IDE controller and let Windows re-install it, and see if that cures the problem. I remember it working on 98SE once.

I'd try to get one of the drives stable. Perhaps leave the Pioneer unplugged, reboot TWICE and run a registry cleaner over the system.
I found I had to do this with my previous PC as the hardware changes weren't written to the registry until the second boot.
Somebody, somewhere, told me that hardware changes are not SET, under XP, until the second boot. Solved the problems I was having so I'm not disputing it.

Uninstall INCD or Sonic DLA if they are installed. They're known to cause problems.

Use this tool to detect the firmware versions on the drives. Go to the Pioneer & LG sites and check for later ones. http://svp.co.uk/helpdesk/index.php?_m=downloads&_a=viewdownload&downloaditemid=1&nav=0

Have the drives on separate IDE controllers if possible.

thanks for the replies guys.

I have an ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe MB with two HDDs connected via SATA. the optical drives are connected via the single PATA interface.

I'd try to get one of the drives stable. Perhaps leave the Pioneer unplugged, reboot TWICE and run a registry cleaner over the system.

Somebody, somewhere, told me that hardware changes are not SET, under XP, until the second boot. Solved the problems I was having so I'm not disputing it.the last part sounds a little strange to me, but I'll try this nevertheless.

Uninstall INCD or Sonic DLA if they are installed. They're known to cause problems.both are not installed.

Use this tool to detect the firmware versions on the drives. Go to the Pioneer & LG sites and check for later ones.both firmwares are already up to date.

Have the drives on separate IDE controllers if possible.that's not possible, as there is only one PATA connector available on my board. but I'll try to have only one drive connected.

I'll report back when I've done the things suggested.

Remove the last 4. Primary and Secondary controllers are related to those last 4, and it looks like you got too many controllers competing for your drives.

Since you are using XP 64bit, isn't there a slight chance of something damaged via Windows Update/fixes?

Try this:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B91629C-3150-47C0-B4EE-DE18DD30A61C&displaylang=en

Maybe another thing worth a shot is installing all the latest drivers (chipset etc.) from the ASUS website:
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=M2N32-SLI%20Deluxe
please select your OS at the top right

As your booting from a SATA drive, try removing all IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

Can yo try working with only one drive or with a new PSU? Maybe yours are dying... That would very well explain the no-go in DOS/boot of the Pioneer DVD-119.

Maybe it is dead already from the PSU spikes - can you check it on another computer?

sorry for not responding, I was on a short vacation :-)
I'll try a few things out and report back tomorrow, thanks for all your input guys.

EDIT:
it's all back to normal after I had to reinstall Windows, so it was a software issue after all...
