Hello,
I am trying to encode an xvid file with mp3 audio to make it a smaller file to fit on my mobile media player. But no matter what bitrate option I select using Lame MP3 it always gives an error
"error initializing audio stream decompression, no installed audio codec can be found to decompress the source audio"
The type of audio the source file has is Mpeg 1 audio layer 3 at 128kbps, 44.1 KHz, 2 channels.
Works fine with other video's, but for this one it just isnt working. I even tried upgrading to the latest Lame ACM Codec and it didnt work.
Any help?

Try internal audio decoder in latest VirtualDub 1.7.X or VirtualDubMod.
VirtualDub 1.7.X
Options > Preferences... > AVI > Prefer internal audio decoders over installed third-party codecs
VirtualDubMod
Options > Preferences... > VDubMod > Audio > Priss rocks!
Or try Avidemux instead VirtualDub.

Ok I have checked that option in vdub, but now how do I select my compression options? How do i get to the screen where i select the bitrates etc like I do for lame MP3?

"error initializing audio stream decompression, no installed audio codec can be found to decompress the source audio"
It's problem with docoding source audio.
if i'm not wrong...
Lame MP3 ACM can encode, but not decode.
Source MP3 audio is decode by other codec - usually by Fraunhofer MPEG Layer-3 Audio Codec (defaul in system).
... but now how do I select my compression options? How do i get to the screen where i select the bitrates etc like I do for lame MP3?
As before.
Previously i'm write about decoder.
BTW
What's exactly info about this file give GSpot and MediaInfo (look at text view instead basic)?
And what's infor from File information option in VirtualDub?

Look at File Information... in VirtualDub.
Audio stream > Compression: Unknown (tag 0055) or Compression: Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec ?
What's used version VirtualDub? Latest?
Go to Audio > Conversion... and try set manually Sampling rate (44100Hz), Precision (16-bit) and Channels (Stereo).
BTW
You can decompress this audio to uncompressed PCM or compress used other codec?
Some other...
Try re-mux this video file used AVI-Mux GUI (http://www.alexander-noe.com/video/amg/).
And other...
You can alway extract audio and convert used some audio converters.

In file information I dont see Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec but I see on compression it says :Unknown (tag 0055)
Do I need to install the fraunhofer iis mpeg layer 3 codec then? does that mean i dont have it?
I have just tried download and installing it but still didnt help,
nothing changed in the information on virtualdubt oo, still says unknown (tag 0055)
I'm using Virtualdub 1.7.7
I tried going to Audio > conversion and setting settings manually but it still did not work

Check other video files with MP3 audio.
tag 0055 it's for MPEG Layer-3 audio.
...Do I need to install the fraunhofer iis mpeg layer 3 codec then? ...
It's default contained in Windows XP and installed with Windows Media Player.
... does that mean i dont have it? ...
Not exactly. Just not used to decoding audio in this specific video file.
It's probably problem with handle/recognise audio stream.
You try re-mux this file? Example used AVI-Mux GUI?
BTW
Maybe any sample file?
Cut fragment in VirtualDub used Direct stream copy mode for audio and video > upload example on http://kotuha.com

@kidcash
Hi!
Perhaps your problem is somehow related to this (to me) curious information included in the MediaInfo analysis, regarding the audio:Writing library : Plugger
What software and procedures did you use to initially convert the original source material (presumably a DVD) to XviD?

That I don't know setarip. Sorry.
I ran the file through avi-mux gui, and then tried to compress the output file from avi-mux gui using Vdub, it worked !.
But I am not sure what AVI-MUX gui did exactly to fix the video file? what did it do?
