View Full Version : why does MPC always reset the "after playing" settings to do nothing?

i cant seem to find anywhere to change this setting other than 2 places but both have their drawbacks:

1) right click on window and change the after playing - that only works for the current video as it seems to reset back to "do nothing" after you exit.

2) adding "/play /close" to the command line via file associations - does exactly what i want, but vista does not let you edit existing file associations like you can in XP (explorer/tools/file options/file types).

I did a test and I get the same behavior. So this must be by design.

And I can see why this happens: users might forget that they set MPC to shutdown/whatever after playback, and wonder why their computer shuts down so often :).

As for Vista not letting you to edit file associations, I'm pretty sure there must be a workaround to do this. The limitation should be only on the interface and not when directly altering the registry. I can't test this because I'm using XP.

then maybe in options, there should be a field to set default behaviour, but not set "shutdown windows" as default? and leave the right click menu to act as a one-off for the current video and default back to what it was set to in the "options default" next time MPC is opened?

stupidly in vista, the only way to edit file associations is by purchasing 3rd party software (creative elements power tools, i've used up my 45 day trial), which i refuse to do as its something that should've been standard as it was on XP!

I guess so. Fortunately there is the command line solution. And again, fortunately MPC is open source, even though it's not being developed anymore.stupidly in vista, the only way to edit file associations is by purchasing 3rd party software (creative elements power tools, i've used up my 45 day trial), which i refuse to do as its something that should've been standard as it was on XP!

I'm pretty sure that all it does is edit the registry. Maybe you can regmon and see what keys the app modifies. Or maybe the keys are the same as in XP, and I'm pretty sure that those must be documented somewhere on the net.

*cough* (http://mpc-hc.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/mpc-hc/?view=log) :D

Adding "HomeCinema" to the project's name doesn't mean it's not MPC anymore... ;)

np: Tortoise - Gamera (A Lazarus Taxon (Disc 1))

Cool, I didn't know about this fork. And from the version history it seems to be quite active. Thanks!

Version history can be viewed at the end of the project's homepage: http://tibrium.neuf.fr

The "after playback" behavior was already discussed in these forums (I don't remember the thread though).
Also the changelog for MPC HC is here (mpc-hc.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/mpc-hc/?view=log).
More info here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=123537).

a search for "mpc after playback" doesnt bring back anything useful in the 185 topics it found.

anyone with the url to where it was discussed would be appreciated.

The conclusion of that discussion was that the behavior is intentional and that it is unlikely that it will be modified.

If you want MPC to always auto-close after playback, then you could modify the file associations to include the "/close" command line switch.

except if you're using vista, which doesnt allow it..

Not true. Use the Registry Editor to modify the file association.
