View Full Version : B-Pyramid's VS more B-Ref's, which results in better encodes?

Over at the DXVA acceleration thread we have run into the issue that enabling b-pyramid's in x264 reduces the amount of b-ref's that can be enabled.
i have heard that the one or the other is better and that there is no difference in the end result.
So the question here is:
Does anyone here notice any large difference in quality between using or not using B-Pyramid while keeping the High@4.1 limit on ref frames

I think it's "safer" to use the appropriate amount of reference frames while leaving B-pyramid off. No big reason to use it.

The DPB patch has been committed. There is no longer a tradeoff between refs and pyramid, you can max both.

I won't comment on what values of ref or pyramid will work. But if ref=4 works, and pyramid works, then ref=4 + pyramid will work.

B-pyramid is still causing issues. I posted some results; let's reroute discussion back to the main thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1089517#post1089517).
