I have run into a problem with a TSS Corp DVD writer on my Dell Dimension. After decrypting 2 or 3 VOB files the drive stops working and displays a timeout error on some DVD's. Any suggestions how this can be overcome. The problem does not happen when I use a Compaq laptop! The OS is Vista and the problem existed with XP too!

It's probable your problem is with hardware. DVD writers are not that expensive nowadays. You can get one for less than $30 so I would suggest replacing your drive or if you have the extra space (IDE/SATA connector, power, drive bay), just add the drive to your PC.

Well, sony is usually a safe bet but they're definitely at the upper end of the price range.

i personally have had several LG drives without any problems (each drive was an upgrade).

If you want a real comparison, I'd check out pcworld.com, they've got a fairly good rep for accurate comparisons. The only drawback is wading through all the useless info to find an accuurate and recent comparison test. (try searching for dvd-rom and comparison in the reviews category0
