SMPlayer is based on MPlayer, which is an "all-in-player".
Hence you do not need any "external" Codecs", since MPlayer has all required decoders/splitters built-in!
Installing any "Codecs" or "Codec Packs" will not effect SMPlayer/MPlayer at all ;)

Since GOMPlayer is DirectShow, he can install "Haali Media Splitter" to be able to open MP4: http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/ (Matroska Splitter)

For DVD he needs an MPEG 2 codec. FFDSHow can decode DVDs, but AFAIK you need to set mpeg2 codec to libmpeg, but he will probably need it anyway for decoding the video in the MP4, after installing go into Decoder options>Codec and set h.264 to libavcodec.

But with GOM Player is little problem.
It's have few internal splitters and decoders - then not use external (for some formats) and can't disable internal.

More advanced and flexible it's The KMPlayer - can use internal filters, external Gabest filters (not registered in system - just stored in player folder) and external filters installed in system.
SMPlayer it's good choice too.
The KMPlayer and SMPlayer for most formats/codecs used internal decoders.
