Hi ppl
I am using both CRT and LCD monitors to work with vids. Maybe because I am used to CRT, I notice that LCDs are wayyyyy too sharp, sharp to the point I see images very noisy, sometimes with color banding, jagged edges, whereas on CRT are more blurred, more like I see them on TV.
Given these artifacts I wonder if LCD is a proper display if one intends to work with video.
what are your thoughts...

Hi!whereas on CRT are more blurred, more like I see them on TV.You're stating the obvious, since they are essentially the same hardware and both generate images in exactly the same manner (drawiing lines on the screen) ;>}

I would say, it's because the LCD is sharper that you need one when working on video, to get the best possible results (detect compression artefacts, etc)
BUT (a big but!), you'll need a high quality LCD! If you take a normal LCD, you won't be able to work efficiently, because of narrow viewing angles and irregular luminosity, in which case you're better off with CRT.
So you'll need LCDs with an IPS or MVA panel, not a TN one, and it has to have a DVI-D (or DVI-I) input for best signal quality. DVI-A inputs are not so good (analog signal only).

ok, i'm working with a dell2007wfp, not a top monitor but not a bad one, from the word i get of users in the net, connected by DVI-D.
I am aware that, say, DV is far from having a clear image, but still these artifacts displayed on LCD are extremely noticeable, and the image appears dirty/'trashy'.
Oh well, maybe it is that i'm not used to. I'll have to learn to visually 'average' between LCD & CRT.
Thanks

You could try using some of ffdshow's filters to soften the picture up a bit, if you decide you can't get used to the new sharpness. Oftentimes just cranking the post-processing is sufficient, and it leaves well-encoded movies still looking sharp.

When I switched from CRT to LCD I noticed a lot more artifacts and blocking on some movies that never bothered me before. However, really well encoded movies without too much compression look amazing. I consider it a fair tradeoff. You might notice more because you see more. But how many people do you know who take off their glasses to appreciate art because they won't see the imperfections?

you'd be supprised
anyways
I do agree, that just goes to show you how much better your LCD is than your CRT, but you can save the CRT with a professional adjustment, most electronic guys can do it for you, cost maybe 50$
