How did you make the original AVI? You should re-encode from your original DVD. The quality will be better.

You need to dispel our forum rule 6 concerns. What is this material?

wohoo... long time I was not thinking about that anymore... so, maybe I'm telling you nonsense now but if so I will be corrected in a minute :)

ogg is the plain container format... it was developed on a nix system and such systems don't distinguishes between different contents. That means if you name it like this: sound.ogg and video.ogg u know what is in the container but what if it is just file.ogg :)

when they, namely Tobias Waldvogel and Koepi, ported the audio file format Ogg Vorbis to windows they was need for renaming it to something different... reason: most of us where interested in vorbis audio which ended *.ogg but as I said previously ogg as a container could also contain video...

a no-go for windows, u can't have the exact same ending for different contents on winows - on nix systems there is no problem with that...

so someone "invented" ogm - call it OGG Media for example. Now, on windows ogm was the container for (ogg) vorbis and video.

the crew around ogg was never really happy with that but that's history now :)

and theora is just a video compression technology as part of the whole Ogg project.

converting ur raw stream to theora is not that difficult...

here is a little how2 (http://people.xiph.org/~j/ogg-theora-microhowto.html).

tool u need can be found here (http://www.v2v.cc/~j/ffmpeg2theora/)...

and be sure u read the whole FAQ (http://www.theora.org/faq/) for any questions u still might have.

cheers - I hope at least 80% of what I told u was correct :)

@ neuron2

uncompressed avi is kind of a capture for sure... what else should that be

ok, i think the best codec for ogg is illiminable (http://www.illiminable.com/ogg/).
i install it, but look at my dsfilter manager, it has unknown merit and i can't set new merit for codec ??!!
how can i sure that the codec works perfectly in every pc?
(i work on a project which has a simple player).
