View Full Version : Subtitle problem with DVD2SVCD 1.0.5 B4

Hi!

I recently ripped "Die üblichen Verdächtigen" (PAL) and tried to convert them to SVCD with DVD2SVCD 1.0.5 build 4.

I've choosen CVD-subs, as my Yamakwa doesn't like/display true SVCD-subs. At the beginning of the conversion-process you can choose the subtitles and configure the input and the output-colors of the DVD-subtitles.

In build 4, DVD2SVCD has a default setting of a black background (transparent), white letters, gray antialiasing and some kind of dark gray border around the letters.

In the past DVD2SVCD used to save the subs with a black background (transparent), white letters, gray antialiasing and a blue border around the letters.

Why has the default setting changed?

The actual build 4 default setting produces some kind of gray-scale bitmaps which (when muxed with submux as CVD) display on my Yamakawa only with white letters and no visible outline. As a consequence the text is nearly unreadable on a white film-background.

-> So I changed the outline colour of the subtitle-output to blue (comparable to the DVD-subtitle-input and the older DVD2SVCD-setting).

Everything worked fine - the subs were saved as 4bpp-bitmaps with 4 colours (validated with IrfanView) - just until the final submux-process.

Then Submux displays the following error-message after having processed the first 400 bitmaps without a problem:

Warning: more than 4 colors found in bitmap, setting color 7 to 0, setting color 12 to 0, setting color 15 to 0
blank image, skipping line 512

-> The mentioned bitmaps show no difference to the previous bitmaps processed by submux without a problem.
-> From this point on, nearly all bitmaps are rejected :(

Can't submux handle subtitle-bitmaps with blue outlined letters (as used by I-Author)?

With true SVCD-sub-muxing it's the same :(

Can anybody help or explain this behaviour?

How can I force the I-Author mode in build 4?

Thanks!
Thomas

BTW: I already tried the converter "24TO4" as mentioned in this forum - no change :(

Hi Deltis,

SorryI don't really have an answer for you here, but I'm interested in this issue since you own a Yamakawa player and I own a Tokai 715S (same as yamakawa in France).

I never succeeded in having selectable subtitles, neither CVD nor SVCD subtitles appear for me. How did you manage to have CVD subs working on your Yamakawa ? I tried them also but I can't get them on the screen, whatever subtitles index I choose! Can you help on this ?

Hi!

I've got a Yamakawa 780 and used until now the last DVD2SVCD-version that still muxed subtitles with I-Author. I converted the CIF-Images with cdmage (as proposed by DVD2SVCD) and burned them with cdrdao. With this method I'm able to select all four subtitle-streams on my Yammi via remote-control. Somtimes switching between them takes some seconds but it works.

INFO: Sometimes you've got to control, if the ripped DVD-subtitles were saved properly as BMP-files, as they might be saved entirely black in some cases -> consequently they don't appear during playback ;)

Now I'm switching to the new DVD2SVCD-release with submux as subtitle-muxer. My Yammi is able to display CVD- but no true SVCD-subs.
As you can see above, not everything worked perfect :(

-> I now solved the problem by reripping all subs with SubRipper...

BTW: Does anybody know if I can force I-Author submuxing with the latest version by editing the INI-file? How can this be done?

Thanks!
Thomas

well... if this is the only way to save your live... here it is:

open dvd2svcd.ini;
search for ForceIAuthorSupport=0. Change it to 1. Done.

remember: this feature will not be supported here (at least by moderators) anymore. If you care, help dvd2svcd to debug SubMux (if it is really buggy). This should be a better option.

...just wanted to know in case of emergency ;)

I now made another CVD-SVCD with DVD2SVCD and submux (subtitles saved during the process as BMPs manually set to white letters and blue outline) without a single error-message :)

...now I have to check if the subtitles are displayed the right way on my Yammi.

BTW: Why does DVD2SVCD save subtitles in grayscale colors by default? Why not the old way with blue outlined letters?

I used DVD2SVCD to burn SVCD with subtitles (1.0.5 build 4, SVCD subtitles)

When I play the disk (using Sampo DVE-611 player), it would not show the subtitles. When I press subtitle button on the remote it looks like the player lets you select subtitles, however they do not show.

I tried different things - and suddenly it worked! So I watched the movie and turned the player off.

The problem is - I do not remember how I got there. No matter what I did since - I was not able to get subtiiles any more.

Please help!
