View Full Version : Converting MKV files to other containers!

There seems to be a spate of people asking how they can convert MKV files to other containers!

I presume the majority of these MKV files do not fall under this forums "fair use" policy and are in violation of rule 6.

Can anything be done about this?

they must validate the question. also saying "i want to learn how to convert mkv to xxx/yyy/zzz" doesn't violate any rules ... afaik

also.. i will suggest automen or autoff :p :D

Could some kind of forum announcement be made?

Why? How is this different from how things work out in real life? If you notice something fishy you call the cops - you don't take out your gun and become the law yourself either.

@SeeMoreDigital

Hi!Could some kind of forum announcement be made?In addition to Rule #6, see the "ANNOUNCEMENT" already in place at the top of the "Newbies" page.

BTW - It's neither fair nor necessary to "presume" a rules violation, 'though you're probably most often correct ;>}

More often than not, in the course of seeking additional information in order to assist the O.P., the truth "rears its ugly head" in responses from such posters...

report the post... mods will take care.
instead, a .js parser (*) should be added to the onclick event of the "submit" button, so whenever the word "best", maybe some other words like common insults and bad words (including "|_337" language variants), appear in a post, a popup window (with two buttons "Reword" and "Go on") should be displayed inviting the user to read the rules more carefully and to reword...
also open the forum rules page thru a function that sets a bool flag to true in the user data record in the DB (**). That indicates the user has at least opened the rules page, if that flag is not set to true then an annoying popup should be displayed whenever the user tries to post a message...

(*) a .js script will run on the client browser so it wont increase the web server CPU load and if the script it's in a .js file it will get cached by the browser reducing traffic and page load time.
(**) a bool field does not increase the DB size in a noticeable way and will prevent to transfer the popup code and htlm evey time a page is loaded, so to reduce traffic and page load time.

P.S.: yes, yes, i know... i'll be in the Hall of Fame of strikes for vulgarities...

Theres been a lot of discussion about it, because just lately more and more consumer devices like game consoles/handhelds have added support for MP4 etc and so people who have perhaps muxed there video into MKV in the past would now like to change the container, so to support the device

I know as im one of them, thankfully because of the this forum ive been able to get educated on how to do this myself, however others who dont know or are new should have the rights to ask or search, when they get problems

i dont see container changing as a big deal at all. as even if source material is available.. a 10 minute remux will always be favorable over several hours, or days reencode from source. in other cases when reencoding is the only option, then requests for ways to encode from the second generation material are befuddling and may only be explained by lack of source.
