View Full Version : AVI from DVD?

I'm sure there's an FAQ or other pointer but I just cannot seem to find it...

I have a non-protected DVD that I've managed to rip to VOB files. What I need is to get the DVD vidoe/audio into avi format so I can reauthor the DVD (long story short, I did not backup my files and all my adobe premier source was lost with a recent hard-drive failure).

I've looked at DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink and RipIt4Me but I just cannot seem to find an option to create an AVI file (or convert the VOB to AVI).

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Hi!

There are many different programs available to readily accomplish this (and using the "Search" function at these Doom9 Forums). All of the followinare freeware:

My personal favorite is "MPEG Mediator".

Other choices that come to mind are the latest version of VirtualDub, or the not-so-recently updated related VirtualDubMOD.

I'm sure your use of the "Search" function here (search for "DVD to .AVI", or similar) will point you to other programs as well.

The programs you've mentioned will not serve your purpose, as they are used for the sole purpose of "ripping" (and compressing and burning) copy protected DVDs...

welcome to doom9,

have a look at (Auto) GKnot (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=64266) ... this seems to be the most appropriate solutions for you - and here are links to some guides (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=92089)...

learning by doing - have fun ;)

So far... no joy. But, it's early and I'm not afraid to experiment a bit. Thanks for the pointers... I usually have luck with "SEARCH" but my initial attempts did not turn up obvious fits for me.

Hello and welcome :)

Look at the doom9's download page and you will find different softwares that makes you able to convert MPEG-2 (DVD video) into an avi container.

Fair questions - I didn't mention them as I assumed (and still do) I just hadn't explored the programs adequately.

I tried:
AutoMKV results:
for AVI container: pointing both IFO and VOB file - preview gives "format not supported error' for avi container
for WMV container: point to VOB file give audio output only

With AutoGK:
pointing at the IFO never resulted in an output video file
pointing at the VOB gave the results I would expect (video output only with no audio)

Again, I'm still learning and experimenting. Thanks to to respondents for pointing me in the right direction. While I'm still learning - I WAS able to rebuild the video stream by combing the output of AutoGK and AutoMKV using Adobe Premier. Still have more to learn to get the tools to work the way I would expect.

I would once again suggest the easy/easier to use MPEG Mediator, VirtualDub, or VirtualDubMod...

There're plenty of applications available that will allow you to re-author and create DVD's from your VOB's original audio and video streams....

@SeeMoreDigital

I was just going to suggest that the OP could d/l MPEG Mediator from your website - but there seems to be a problem connecting to it from the links in your signature...

searching Google for MPEG Mediator will give a few results... but I'd say it is not as easy as Auto GK for a beginner...

and I can't understand what shall be so difficult about using Auto GK especially after pointing to various user guides ...
