only 2.0x

My 8x drive can go faster, rips went faster before, but now my dvd steems to stick to 2.0x in smartripper. Realy don't get it, cpu is like max 15% all time and speed is constant.

What's wrong here. I installed compel aspi for xp (same als adaptec in win98 i suppose).

So it was ripping at 8x in win98 and now in XP its 2x? Alot of people have this problem. Have a look around and keep an eye out for topics with headings 'dvd speed problems' or whatever. There have been some pretty big discussions about it, hopefully there not too old and they are still on the forum.

I had the same problem, went into the bios and turned OFF udma for the dvd-rom, now ripping at 6.5x go figure....

Samething for me, it was once ripping in Xp at 4x, now its like 2x.

ASPI has no effect on the speed at which the drive reads.
That is down to your IDE controller drivers.
Make sure you have configured your drive in your bios and set it to udma mode where appropriate. Then in Windows, you need to go into device manager and look at the IDE controllers section. check the properties of all entries + their sub entries for UDMA settings.

I'm running into a 2x limit for ripping encrypted discs too. I have one unencrypted disc and when I try to rip that it goes faster, up to 4x (which is the specced read speed for this drive).

I'm using a Pioneer DVR-A03 under WinXP.

I haven't tried playing with any of the BIOS IDE/DMA settings yet.

Hey Lightning, what is PIO? What is the difference between PIO vs. DMA vs. UDMA ? I have two IDE channel controlled by a Promise FastTrak Controller. What should Harddrives use (PIO, DMA, UDMA) and what should CDROMs (CDR/W, DVD/R) use? If you could give me a lil help i'd appreciate it.

UDMA is faster than DMA, DMA is faster than PIO.

You therefore want them all to be running UDMA (where supported).

Hi all-

I was suffering the same indignity of having a 16X drive which only ripped at 2X.....Until I chanced upon an odd note in a forum - - -

Uninstall the IDE drivers via the hardware device manager - Then reboot and allow the system to re-install - All of a sudden I have `normal` ripping speeds..............


Nearly as good as an orgasm on a sunday morning........NEARLY....

Had only PIO mode.


Solution: de-install secondary IDE channel and reboot. Now set to UDMA 4.


Doesn't this make you hate and love computers at the same time? How can a machine that knows only 0 and 1 act so random? LOL

It worked for my first few rips, since then it has been at 2x at the most(usually 1.7).

I will try uninstalling the IDE channels and see how that does.

Mmmmm, what's the "typical" ripping speed on a, let's say at least 10x DVD and >1GHz CPU?

I'm getting 2.5x while ripping with Smartripper. (8x DVD, Tualatin 1266 Mhz, UDMA mode and DMA set in Windows, VIA 4in1 installed)

BTW: Initially I forgot to install ASPI and VIA 4in1 and I was getting only 1.7x max.

It depends on the speed at which your drive can read CSS encrypted DVD. This varies from drive to drive and is in now way related to their actual speed - ie. 10x in your case.
Mine is rated at 12x and I get ~8x with my program.

And I know that for instance that the Toshiba 16x is locked at 2-4x. My new Peioneer is getting around 6-11x, depending on the movie.

Uninstalling the drives in XP did not work for that Sony, BTW.
