This pre-release software is provided for testing purposes only. Microsoft does not recommend installing this software on primary or mission critical systems.

It's still ONLY a Release Candidate and not the final one.

In early testing phase too, and not appropriate yet for serious deployment. Topic title inaccurate.

xp pre-release sp3 not encoding faster than xp sp2 on Pentium 4.

Wouldn't expect it to!, the only way it could is if some of the system stuff was coded better, thus using lower CPU themselves leaving more cycles for the encoding! - its not a new memory subsystem etc which helped Xp x64 over XP very slightly.

The difference that some people find between XP and Vista is because of the overhead of the Vista interface etc, which uses CPU cycles O

I changed the topic because SP3 and SP3 beta are two different things, one of which is statistically more likely to break your computer.

its microsoft
that still means its beta
they've just worked out the bugs that will EVERYONE's system, and not the ones that will PROBABLY break them

My apology

I only just realized my mistake. At first glance I thought it was a final version.
I thought I´d add that quote from Microsoft to deter others. I only reinstalled recently , so I won´t be testing anytime soon. If it´s not broke... :)

I changed the title to mention RC. It should be feature complete, the only changes to be made at this point would be bugfixes. I'm going to reinstall my box pretty soon and I've already prepared a Windows CD with the SP3 slipstreamed (thank god you still can even though they changed the syntax... this is going to be a PITA with Vista.. I hope I can skip that bloated piece of *** altogether)

I've seen at least one playback related bug due to the vista SP1 released, why would you want to slipstream a totally untested Service Pack?

Any bets as to whether or not WGA and IE7 are automatically installed in SP3?

Any bets as to whether or not WGA and IE7 are automatically installed in SP3?I'll install SP3 on a friends SP1 PC and report back... Probably Monday!

no, IE7 is not installed... and neither is WMP11.

this SP3 (RC1) is a classic SP - mainly hotfixes and bugfixes are included. That said, WGA free installations (ok MSIE7 is now already WGA free but still not included in this RC).

big networking improvements too, and asks no more for serial during slipstreamed install

that's cool - maybe they can keep XP alive for a few more years!

Vista still looks too much like Win ME to me. The massive DRM in there is a huge turnoff as well, and no fancy GUI will change that point ;) An SP3 for XP was imposing itself anyway, especially with the success of Autopatcher and similar administrative patching tools.
Instead of having people select wich updates they need/want, force thoe whole of them at once, plus a bunch of possibly consumer-unfriendly stuff noone wouldve been expected to install willingly if it was available outside of a service pack ;)
