I'm trying to compress a 4.3GB DVD to 800MB. The movie length is 2hr 48mins. I choose a video bitrate of 598kbps and auido bitrate 64kbps. I customised the already exisiting HQ Slow profile. There are certain scenes in the movie (like fight sequels or even march protests by groups of people which includes a lot of video data) where the video looks like it's rendered using square pixels, or in other words it appears garbled. I tried a variety of configurations in the HQ Slow profile to correct it but no use. Here is everything i tried

Codec: x264
File format: mkv, mp4
No of passes: Single pass, Double pass
Noise: No Noise, Minimal noise, Little noise
Four CC: avc1, x264
Quantization matrix: JVT, jvt(custom)
Video bitrate: 598kbps
The rest of the settings are according to the actual HQ Slow profile.

Version of MeGUI i'm using is 0.2.6.1042

Previously I've ripped another movie of same length but din't encounter any problems. Please suggest me anything and everything that can be tweaked to get the best results.

Try using the regular, flat quantmatrix; you don't really need CQMs with x264 like you often do with Xvid or MPEG-2. Especially at low bitrates.

Twopass is pretty much a requirement for what you're doing to.

Is that all? I feel like I need to tweak a little more.

nope, resolution isn't an issue for me coz i've previously ripped same running length movies with the same resolution but with awesome quality. please suggest something worth trying

every movie has its own compressibility.what you said means exactly nothing.

ok i din't mention that the resolution i've chosen is 720x304. The DVDs i'm ripping are all from the same marketing group that we obtain from an online store. Their sources are always progressive, non-interlaced, widescreen editions with 16:9 aspect ratio.

For example TV shows like Conan O'Brien have many static scenes (talking heads) so it does not require high bitrate but dynamic movies will look worse with the same bitrate. Codec in this case has to spend more to describe motion therefore overall quality must be worse.

Yup! Just now I tried the max recommended settings in HQ Slow profile to observe that there's a very little improvement in the color of the characters but the noise continues unfiltered.

Sorry to say but the 640x272 resolution even returned some pathetic results :(
