Some captured VHS tapes have this kind of artifact on them:

it's that black shadow image to the right of the text.

I'd like to see if there's an AviSynth plug in to help me minimize or eliminate this, but I don't know where to start looking, as I don't know the proper/accepted name for this type of problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks to everyone on the forum who has helped with other items already.

Could be luma or chroma shift, but without a sample its hard to say for sure.

That's caused by poor voltage regulation somewhere in the chain from source to capture. That kind of thing is commonly seen on poor TVs, where the high voltage regulator responds too slowly to the change from white to black. A white causes a high beam current which affects the voltage and the regulator has to kick in to keep the voltage constant. It's the poor responsiveness of the regulator that causes it. I don't see much hope for fixing that with a filter. You could try a better VCR in the hope that it is caused there and is not already in the source on the tape.

On some really bad TVs, the whole image shrinks on a bright scene!
