Hey guys. Long time listener, first time caller.
So I have a problem with my capture card. It locks up my PC when viewing input. Not just the program, but the whole PC. I have to do a cold boot to get it back up again. There seems to be no consistent thing I am doing that makes it lock up. I don't have a host of wacky codecs (just DivX and Xvid), I'm not running a thousand things in the background. Heck, I don't even have to be actively capturing video for it to lock up. Just using Vdub as a television will do it, after some time. There's not really a hard-and-fast timeframe for the lockup, either. Sometimes it's 30 seconds, others it's 20 minutes.
I have tried various capture programs, such as Virtualdub (old versions to the newest one, including Vdubmod) iuVCR, and AMCAP. I've never tried Catalyst Media Center (which comes with the device) because it won't even install off the CD, but whatev. My old ATI TV Wonder Value Edition got along swimmingly with any program I chose to capture with, so I don't see how this should be any different.
I've updated drivers and tried various versions of capture programs, no change in the result of the problem. I've uninstalled all ATI-specific applications off the machine, leaving only the device driver.
My specs are as follows: Core2Duo 6400, 2 gigs of ram, Nvidia 7950GT video card (maybe it's not getting along with the ATI cap card? Haha). I wonder if there IS some sort of software conflict, as Vdubmod and some versions of Vdub proper give me a panic error that reads "Video device already in use: You cannot use this device when another video application, such as a DVD, video conferencing, video editing, TV viewers, or WebTV for Windows is already using it." Obviously I do not have any of those things currently running.
If I'm leaving anything out, let me know.
Anyway, I'd love to get this to stop locking up, as video capturing and editing is a hobby of mine that I can't do with this bum card. If you can't think of anything, maybe you can suggest a good card that will get along with Vdub and allow me to capture video (preferably at 720x480).
Thanks for any input you can give me.
