View Full Version : I keep burning coasters

I have the NEC ND4551-A and Nero Express 6.6.0.15 that came with it. Every time I try to burn DVD+/-R (or RW) discs, the first 2 or 3 work fine and then after that it burns coaster after coaster. Sometimes the process finishes just fine but the disc is totally unreadable afterward. The same discs burn fine in my laptop, I've tried a number of different brands. Any ideas? Sometimes I get a "power calibration error" message, which doesn't really tell me anything.
I thought maybe I should clean it, but how do you clean the write laser?
It reads just fine, I watch DVD movies on it often. Only writing doesn't work.

Thanks, I'll try those. I assume those apply to DVD too? (Forgot to mention that before. Edited.) I'll see if I can give it its own power line if it doesn't have that already. How do I check the firmware version?
Also, there's a strange issue Windows has with reading discs that might be related. It frequently fails to update the disc information when a disc is inserted. A while ago I put in a DVD movie ("DOT_HACK_SIGN_V2"), and it showed that as the name of the disc in My Computer. Since then I've put in a few other discs, but it still shows that movie's title! When I try to open the drive in explorer, I get the "Open with" dialog. http://hyperhacker.no-ip.org/b/smilies/wtf2.gif (Screenshot here (http://hyperhacker.no-ip.org/b/openwith.jpg), that's not even the disc that's inserted...) Meanwhile I can still play movies in VLC and view the contents of my DVD-Rs in the command prompt.
