Anyone have any idea on which dye colors might be better than others? Would there be a difference or not? If so, what might they be? If you can answer any questions, it would be greatly appriciated. Also, does anyone have problems with their SONY DVD players reading DVD-R's burned at 2X? I have backed up multiple dvd's i have, which all play on my computer absolutely fine, but when played on my sony i get weird BLOCKS showing up, and sometimes a lock up. I havent tried wether this only happens at 2X recording or 1X, but maybe someone would have some insight to this? Thanks much!

I've had the same problem with my Sony player - I'm going to try burning at 1x to see if it makes a difference. If you're using Smart-Ripper I found another post that suggested disabling "Fast Error Skip" which I will try too. I'll let you know what happens via this thread. If you find out anything new, please do the same.
Thanks

I've been using disks from CD-Recordable. I didn't have this problem on the blank that came with the drive. . . have you tried other DVDrs?

I've resorted to using the Apple DVD-Rs. They are made by Pioneer and they play fine in both of my players. If you buy them from Apple they are 5 for $25 so it's not bad.

You can read a FAQ's at cd-recordable.com. They give a good explaination about it and from what i raed, it has very little if Nothing to do with the color of the discs, just the quality of the media. They state some media works better in some machines than others and whether its thiers or someone eleses, use the media that works best for you. Not trying to give them a plug, but have burned 40 double sided and only got a few bad. (I messed up on the process). Cant speak for others, but i dont have a prob. Trying to be helpful.:)

I had a Sony and had the same problem so I purchased an Apex AD1500 instead. It plays them all: CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, VCD, SVCD and so on.... I know the relective material used to manufacture the disc will make a difference, I prefer a gold backing material instead of silver for best results. Check http//:www.vcdhelp.com for more info on DVD players with a description of what media they will play!

I agree. I had a skip problem early on that I thought might be the media -- but I upgraded the firmware on my standalone player and it went away. I have had 100% success rate with the discs from cd-recordable.com so far. And both of the fairly large orders I've made were delivered within 3 working days.
I don't really care where people buy their products and have no interest one way or the other -- but just so everyone on the forum gets a fair assessment, this company has been good for my purposes so far.

The media I mentioned will work just fine, in fact I only had two bad discs out of 150+ so far and they will play on many settop players (kenwood, pioneer, apex...etc).

I've tried a few experiments on disks from cd-recordable.com since my last post based on suggestions from others:
-If ripping with Smart-ripper uncheck "Fast Error Skip"
-close any unnecessary applications throughout the entire backup process.
-Defrag drive frequently if backing up numerous disks
So far the random "blocks" have not reappeared on disks burned after taking these three steps. Caution: I have no idea what "Fast Error Skip" actually does or if it is ever necessary. I'm sure it's there for a reason. In DVD-Decrypter it's unchecked by default.
Conclusion - cd-recordable.com disks seem to work fine, they're cheap, and they deliver quickly (in the U.S. anyway). I just need to learn to get along without email and other apps while backing up.
Hope this helps.
