My Sony ext. burner died, and I replaced w/ a better unit, but it is strictly USB where my Sony would go firewire 1394. My laptop only has 2 USB connections, using a spreader slows it down immensely. Everything was ok for awhile, but all of a sudden one external hard-drive is getting a "delayed write failed" error. I'm sure the swapping of drives and the burner back & forth caused some glitch. I re-formatted the hard-drive and that didn't solve it, but the hard-drive seems ok. I googled some stuff, and see that this "delayed write- error is not uncommon, and the solution not fully apparent. One response talked about in Windows (XP) going to "edit drive letter and path". I do see now that my computer is now assigning the hard-drive the letter "E" which used to be what the named path for my burner. I think this is my problem, but the only options I can get in Computer Management are disable, update driver, etc. Can someone please tell me how to do this?? Thx

Right-click My Computer and select Manage. Click Disk Management, then right-click the drive from the upper list and select Change Drive Letter and Paths...

Does it happen for the same drive on both USB ports?

Have a look at:

Thanks, CRW03 got me on the right track. We'll see if this does it. One thing, though. I had the burner set up; I still can't change that path, but I disconnected and re-connected ext. hard-drive and this let me change path for drive.
