Please advise me on how to remove this 'glowing' effects near the edges (of each side), while maintaining the grain and color level as much as possible. Please note that these pictures are almost 70-90 years old, the very 1st generattion color photograph, also known as Autochrome. Here is a short mpeg2 clip (http://www.uploading.com/files/F9RNZPCJ/clip1.DVBT.mpg.html) from BBC (Source: Freeview DVBT)

I'm probably being thick or uncritical, but I can't see anything wrong with the sample you've provided.
(Apart from the "BBC Four" logo. That's an abomination - a public service broadcaster with a guaranteed income of £3bn per year doesn't need to brand and advertise itself. Still, I'm sure LogoAway will take care of it.)
Cheers,
David.

There are some glows...if you look near the edges bottom , left & right..
I Agree with you about bbc four logo...in fact, I wrote to BBC quite a few times not include the logo.

I think the same series, if not the exact same programme, is on BBC Two at this very moment. It's quite interesting.
Cheers,
David.

Unfortunately, there aren't any filters to remove vignetting. You'd probably have to create a mask by hand, apply levels, and overlay/mt_merge the original & releveled with the mask.

in terms of vignetting this might be something to look at...

I don't have a clue on how to remove vignetting but i remember reading about it after using hugin. It does it automatically.

Thanks for the info, foxyshadis. Will it be possible for you to kindly explain how to "create a mask by hand, apply levels, and overlay/mt_merge the original & releveled with the mask." - I have no idea how to do such things
Hopefully one of our experts will kindly make a filter for this purpose. :)

Vigenetting?
Not here!
Raw frame grab from clip1.DVBT.mpg attached.
If you mean the slight ringing at the very edges of the image - forget about it, or crop it.
Cheers,
David.
