Now that PowerDVD is prohibiting playback of everything but MAFIAA-sanctioned content, I had the idea that a lot of the disparate HD DVD tools here could be combined to create a lightweight, open source HD DVD player application for Windows. If anyone is interested I can set up an SF project.

IIrc, we're quite far in the audio department (only the high def DTS varieties missing), in the video department (ffdshow.. not sure if it contains VC-1 decoding but I think there's some code out there) - the main issue is navigation... as with DVD, the necessary specs are under NDA.
The same also goes for Blu-ray by the way.. codecs are one piece of the puzzle, but it's the "putting it all together" part that's quite involved.
I believe you'll find some posts about using MPC together with commercial filters to play HD discs.. at this point it's a rather patchworky solution though.
