Is podcasting only for free media? Is there such thing as podcasting for paid media?

If I offered a service where people can subscribe to media libraries (pay for access to a library of several videos), does it make sense to podcast?

From what I understand about podcasting (which isn't that much), podcasting is basically a way to keep getting updated content (free content) to be automatically downloaded to the portable MP3/video player when new content becomes available.

So in my case, I guess podcasting wouldn't really make sense, since the person will be subscribing to a library of STATIC content (no new videos are added after they subscribe anyways), so I guess that defeats the purpose/usefulness of podcasting?

Am I right?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

you may want to think twice before putting DRM on podcasts...

"Podcast" is the Web 2.0-buzzword-happy way of saying "a free MP3 download." Nothing more, nothing less.

Wow, talk about missing the point...

To elaborate on DS's point, "PodCasting" is a distribution channel, not a technology. The whole point is that you can achieve wide distribution through a variety of networks that aggregate and promote freely distributed content.
