View Full Version : Few, Quick Questions

I was just wondering...

1. On a series disc with different VTSes, should one NOT use the REDIST_USE_FINAL_Q then?

2. I use CCE to encode, but when using HC Enc for the redist, do the speed settings of Low/Norm/High affect the speed of the redistribution? (And if yes, does it realistically matter which you choose?)

3. Do people think it's worth setting the redist percent above 10% Or is anything above that just a waste of time?

Thanks in advance for any reply.

1. Enabling (=1) or disabling (=0) of REDIST_USE_FINAL_Q= in the rebuilder.ini [Options] is independent of series or non-series VTS.
I leave it always enabled, it takes more time to calculate the Q for redistribution though.

2. DVD-RB sets HC to "FAST" for the Q analysis and the redistribution pass to save some time. It will resume your selection for the encoding passes (I always use "BEST").

3. 10% are normally fine - based on many tests. There might be exceptions for unusual segments, with intermittent black scenes for example, when the 10% samples should all be taken from the black scenes by coincidence. In such cases one would have to set it to 50 ..... 100%.

I guess I wondered about that because the status log would say something along the lines of:

Analyzing VTS_02 for optimal CQ factor.

I wondered if that would be right for a series disc, when VTSs 03 and 04 were episodes of similar size.

2. This was changed internally in DVD Rebuilder PRO 1.26.2:

- Turned off HC VBV and scene detection (except for a 100%
setting) during REDISTRIBUTION. This appears to have been
slowing down the speed of HC redist on some systems.
Also set HC to fast mode during the REDISTRIBUTION pass
as it gives the same results.

I think it might be worthwhile for longish segments to preview them first and get an idea of how much they fluctuate from bright to dark and action to still. You might then decide to split these cells to obtain a better redistribution. Or up the %. I remember when boulder first proposed the redistribution idea, he said something like doing a 100% CQ run was the way for him to go.

Yes, I use 100%. I don't mind the extra time it takes as I can leave the computer running 24/7. That way I can be sure that the redistribution is as accurate as it can get :)
