Hi folks,
I just got a crt projector. I was testing the 1 min Fantastic-4 1080p .mov clip and I'm seeing color banding.
Here is the screenshot which I captured using ImageMagick's import tool.

I was thinking that since it's just a clip, it must have been compressed so much so people don't have to download big files from the site.
Can someone please give me a link for another real 1080p clip taken from HDDVD or Bluray? Even a 1 min clip will do. Then I will test it again.
Thanks,
V

1080p as delivered for consumers (via DVB/ATSC, trailers, hd disks etc.) is still 8 bit 4:2:0. While it may look better on HD DVD / Blu ray compared to a trailer it will not be perfect, because there only 8 bits to represent this very very fine gradient.

That Marvel image is a lot worse than what HD-DVDs can do. Compare this real screenshot of a pretty nice gradient from HD-DVD.

I took another capture but this time using quality 100% and png format. 1080p is being played by mplayer -vo xv
The command I used while movie was in pause mode was:
DISPLAY=:0 import -window root -quality 100 png:fantasic4.png
Here is the pic.

And here is another pic of the same frame but this time from my digital camera. Movie is being projected by Sony 1272 crt projector.

I don't think something is wrong with my projector because I used the "import" tool to capture the current screen(first pic) which is actually bypassing the projector. The 2nd pic shows really what I am seeing. And below shows a pic of how nice it is in other movie source. I also took this picture using my digital camera, 10 ft away from screen.

So could it really be that the file was compressed so badly?

I think I should not worry too much. :D I'll just have to accept the reality that the 1080p trailers that apple.com provides to the public is highly compressed so that they can easily be donwloaded.
