View Full Version : Can your PC play this file?

I'm starting to think about an upgrade fro my Athlon 64 X2 3800+. One thing I would find quite handy is to play back PAL resolution lossless ffv1 files, which seems to need 30-50% more speed per core (single-threaded decoder) than I've got now. Rather than buying something which "ought to do it" I'd like to be sure. So I be grateful if somebody would test a file for me.
Can your PC play this file (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6Q3ZCCUC) without skipping/stuttering using the ffdshow decoder (I'm on tryout 1523)? If so, what's your rig? And how much CPU is it using?
If you have the right monitor and another core, can you also have ffdshow do a spline resize to 1920x1080? Or a sinc resize (he says wistfully)?

While I wait, I'm just using the ffdshow decoder that comes with the latest 'stable' CCCP release (link (http://cccp-project.net/)). I have my codec chains in a relatively stable state, so don't ask me to reinstall something else. :p

Okay, it plays perfectly fine. It uses about 40% of one core (the other core sits at 0%). I can't tell you if this is good or bad, though, as I usually only deal with mpeg2 files from my DVR and their subsequent DivX/Xvid transcodes. (That uses, at most, 5-8% of one core.)

Oh, forgot to try that.
no resize = 38-42% of one core
spline resize = 61-65% of one core
sinc resize = 68-72% of one core

Are you sure about the "of one core"? That's not the cpu repoted by task manager (which is percentage of all cores)?
Not that I want to doubt you, it's just that my mind is reeling at the speed disparity. :\

I cited the overall CPU since nothing in the playback chain is SMP-aware, but you're right: 40% on my dual core is equivalent to 80% on a unicore. :p Sorry. :o
So to relieve you of any doubt, here's the playback (I have it in a loop, and let it run so the CPU graph would fill up):

Thank you Zach, this is all a very pleasant surprise. I thought it would be much closer, and I might have to think about dual vs quad core to get the speed-per-core up for single-threaded decoders/resizers.
