i am thinking of buying this streaming movie from amazon, but i want to be able to download it and rip it. it looks like amazon makes this hard to do, and i was wondering if it is possible.

anyone got any experience with this?

also curious if there are any straightforward ways to transfer vhs tapes to dvd, and if it is as easy as buying one of the vhs/dvd hybrid players.

thanks.

here's some info about unbox:

Can I burn an Unbox video to a DVD?

Yes, you can burn Unbox videos to a DVD or other removable computer storage device for the purpose of backing up your videos. However, Unbox videos burned to a DVD will not be readable by a DVD player.

What is the difference between renting and purchasing Unbox videos?

When you choose to rent an Amazon Unbox video, your access to view the file is limited by the rental license agreement in our Unbox Video: Terms of Use. After you rent and download an Amazon Unbox Video to a compatible computer or TiVo DVR, you will have a limited period of time in which to begin viewing it. That period is 30 days unless otherwise specified on the product detail page for the Unbox Video rental. After you begin playing an Amazon Unbox Video, you will have 24 hours to complete viewing it. After these expiration times, the Amazon Unbox Video will automatically be deleted from your computer or TiVo DVR. Rented Unbox videos are not available for re-download from Your Media Library.

If you purchase Amazon Unbox Video, your rights to view the file do not expire, except as provided in our Unbox Video: Terms of Use. Purchased Unbox videos are generally available for redownload from Your Media Library and can be downloaded on up to 2 (two) different personal computers or TiVo DVRs and can be transferred to up to 2 (two) portable devices at any one time.

Please note that due to licensing restrictions certain new release movies are unavailable for redownload for an unspecified period of time starting 90 days after their release date. While these movies can be viewed as often as you like during this window, they cannot be redownloaded from Your Media Library.

Hi!

The information regarding this specific video, at the link you've provided, appears to indicate that it is available ONLY on a rental basis.

If this is so, it would preclude any further conversation at the Doom9 Forums regarding downloading and ripping it...

Not quite. He could rip it but he would have to delete the rip when the viewing period ends. Since that's only 24 hours, it's unlikely to be very useful to go through that however.

Buy a DVD recorder and connect your VHS player to it. If they are commercial tapes you may not be able to copy them, however.

i guess i'll look around on these forums for more info about this subject, though if you don't mind explaining- why not?

Because they have a technology called Macrovision, which is designed to prevent copying. Your DVD recorder will detect it and refuse to copy the source. You can buy an external box that will remove Macrovision, however. They are not overly expensive.

Or depending on the brand and model of the recorder, you can hack the firmware to bypass the macrovision.
