I was wondering what kind of performance boost I would notice with video encoding if going from:
AMD Dual-Core 4400+ Socket 939
2x1GB DDR-400
Asus A8N-E Mainboard
To:
Intel Quad-Core Q6600 1066 FSB
2x1GB DDR2-1066
Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R
With the 2 extra cores and the huge jump in FSB double/triple the frames per second?

Huge. Maybe not double, but a big boost for sure. Check the MeGUI benchmarks thread to see what you can expect

I'd hazard a guess that you'll get at least double based on this chart:
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3038&p=12
seeing as the Q6600 gets between 50-80% higher performance than then AMD X2 5600+.

Actually, let me also say "It's highly dependent on the settings you choose too". Depending on the source and settings chosen, X264 can vary between 300% and 700% CPU usage on a quadcore. So while you may not get a doubling of FPS, you could probably afford to increase quality settings and not get the same performance hit (if ya know what i mean).

Well, using the same templates in Staxrip, I am getting about 3x faster encode times.
I typically do 1-pass constant quality and got about 25fps using my old AMD 4400+. Now I am getting about 70-80fps.
I've tried the same source files as a benchmark test.
I did also upgrade all the other components...
2GB DDR400 to 2GB DDR21066.
2x320GB SATA-I in Raid0 to (3)x320GB SATA-II in Raid0
Asus A8N-E Nforce4 to Gigabyte P35-DS3R
Nvidia 7300 to 8600 GT
XP Pro (32bit) to Vista Enterprise (32bit)
Not sure how much the other upgrades helped but I am VERY happy overall. Makes me remember how long it used to take to convert CD's to MP3 compared to now.
I remember DVD movie conversions that lasted days when AVC first came out.....
