If I've got a DVD that has been encoded using FOX1 matrix, I know (well, I have read), that using a matrix slightly lower, such as FOX2 or FOX3, could retain fine details obtaining a sharp image.

But if you've got a DVD that has been encoded with 3 matrices (these are CCE standard matrix, then halved and then quartered), which matrix should I choose?.

I was thinking to pick the halved one (or similar), but then I thought that if in some GOP's the frecuencies were already discarded by CCE standard matrix, maybe it was not the right decision.

So which one should I choose?. A matrix between CCE standard and the halved one?.

All of this is when I'm thinking to use HC encoder or QuEnc.

If you are using CCE sp/sp2... use the Standard Mpeg matrix and let CCE decide when it needs to adjust the matrix.


As far as use Fox 1, 2 or 3 with HC or QuEnc... just make sure the bitrate of the video you are encoding calls for it. Yes Fox 1, 2 and 3 can retain better detail when used correctly.

What I do when the original uses one matrix, it is to look to the quantization (bitrate viewer) and the matrix used in the original, and then use a lower matrix, trying to find an average quant of 7, or even 8 if it is like FOX1 or 2. If it compress more, I try to find a quant of 6.

These are the advices that manono gave me.

But this is the doubt that I've got when I have a DVD with 3 matrix encode :(.

in short... Matrices are designed to work at different bitrates with different video type (fast action, anima, CG...etc) not one does all of them great.... the Standard mpeg matrix works OK to well with most... it's a good all-round matrix.

The Fox matrices work well at high bitrates.
