I was wondering if tmpgenc author 3 has been fixed yet, i had v3.0.5.149 which always re-encoded the video even though it was dvd spec and there was no need to do so. I have checked the revision history which shows its now upto 3.0.9.166 but it doesn't mention if this problem has been fixed.

Does any one know ??

Hi!

I don't know, since I haven't purchased the upgrade - mainly because I find that v.1.6 serves all my needs.

However, since you have purchased v.3.xxx, why don't you simply download and install the free-to-registered-owners update v.3.0.9.111 and see for yourself if the "always re-encoded" situation has been addressed?

I uninstalled it and put 1.6 back, guess i could install it again and give it a try. 1.6 did nearly everything i needed, one main thing it doesn't do is 16.9 menus.

I'm working with the current version. It does everything I want to. However, all .mpg files have gone through MPEGValidator.

Hi!

Please clarify - A Googlesearch indicates that MPEG Validator is a tool that is limited to being an:MPEG-2 Program Stream Analyzer. Give us all info about MPEG-2 Program Stream Itself and detailed info about MPEG-2 video.
It also contain a bitrate viewer and a gop structure viewer. How does running an MPEG2 file/stream through that program change how that file is handled by TMPGEnc DVD Author v.3.xxx?

Maybe he's just using it to verify that the stream is DVD compliant. If it isn't, then he knows he has to re-encode it.

@neuron2

Perhaps so, but there are earlier threads in which it's been indicated that already compliant files, while properly processed, without re-encoding by v.1.6, while v.3.xxx "insisted" on re-coding the very same files...

IIRC, it turned out that it was because the GOPs were too large. Wouldn't swear to it though.

Sorry for the delay, I forgot about the thread.

Yes, the reason why the material was re-transcoded (DVDA does not have an encoder but the Intercom transcoder) was the gop size. I'm now using Womble MPEG DVD to get a clean stream from my dvb recordings, and everything seems to be fine now. I had one track the other night that had a large section to be worked on by DVDA and I still don't know why because MPEG Validator showed there was no error ... But all in all it is usable, and it has been given some very interesting additional templates and buttons.
